About the Author
Grad L. Flick received his Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology from the University of Miami in 1969 with APA-approved internship at the University of Florida Medical Center. A licensed psychologist since 1971, Dr. Flick has specializations in neuropsychology and applied psychophysiology. He has been certified in stress management and employee assistance, and he has Fellow and Diplomatic status from the American Board of Medical Psychotherapists. He has also held positions in psychology at the University of New Orleans and Louisiana State University School of Medicine, and has served as consultant to several hospitals in the New Orleans and Mississippi Gulf Coast area. Since 1971, he has been in private practice and is currently director of Seacoast Psychological Associates, Inc. Dr. Flick and his wife, Alma L. Flick, Ph. D., specialize in the evaluation and treatment of children, adolescents, and adults with Attention Deficit Disorder, and other learning and behavioral problems. Dr. Grad Flick is also director of the ADD Clinic, which offers year-round programs for children, adolescents, and adults, as well as behavioral and cognitive therapies, and traditional and group therapies. A Summer Camp and summer program for children with ADD/ADHD are also offered.
Dr. Flick, who is currently Adjunct Professor at the University of Southern Mississippi Regional Gulf Park Campus in Long Beach has numerous publication credits, has conducted many workshops for both parents and teachers on ADD, and has given lectures to various parent and teacher organizations on ADD and Child Management. He is the author of Power Parenting for Children with ADD/ADHD: A Practical Parent's Guide for Managing Difficult Behaviors (The Center for Applied Research in Education, 1996), ADD/ADHD Behavior-Change Resource Kit (The Center for Applied Research in Education, 1997), and Managing Difficult Behavior in the Classroom: A Pocket Guide for Teachers (Seacoast Publications, 1999). He has over 28 years' experience in both research and clinical practice with children who present attentional, learning, and/or behavioral disorders. Drs. Grad and Alma Flick have also parented a child with learning disability and Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder.

WHAT DOES THIS RESOURCE OFFER?

ADD/ADHD Behavior-Change Resource Kit first presents general information on the behaviors involved in the ADD/ADHD pattern, along with recent information on their biological bases. Behavioral descriptions, together with information from parents, teachers and the child, in the form of psychological data, are integrated to form diagnostic impressions of ADD/ADHD along with its many co-morbid disorders and mimic syndromes. Typically, a medication approach is used, especially with more severe forms of ADD/ADHD, and information is provided in various forms to educate parents, teachers, and counselors about the variety of medications available. It is well known, however, that the best outcomes are obtained when a medication regime is combined with some form if behavioral intervention and other strategies. Many children with ADD/ADHD lack various skills, and it is clear that "pills don't teach skills." Consequently, this resource presents a host of exercises and strategies, utilizing some of the most recently developed technology to help the child with ADD/ADHD. For the most part, these techniques and strategies involve behavioral procedures, but many incorporate the use of commonly known sports games and recreational outlets, as well as some procedures that have been specifically developed for use with ADD/ADHD children.

ADD/ADHD Behavior-Change Resource Kit addresses common problems such as homework and social peer problems often encountered by children with ADD/ADHD. There are provisions for teachers, parents, and counselors to work individually with these children, and-more important-strategic plans for cooperation in monitoring and managing the child's behavior in combined home and school programs. The ultimate cooperation may result from integrative home, school, and clinic programs, where all parties involved are working to help the child. In general, the greater the combined effort, the more rapidly a child may show improvement and the faster she or he will acquire learned adaptive skills that will assist her or him in adjusting to the problems and difficulties manifested by attention deficit disorders.

Since ADD/ADHD behavior is often a greater problem in school situations, a comprehensive approach to accommodation strategies, adaptive techniques, and inclusion procedures is emphasized. This chapter covers general behavioral approaches as well as specific interventions geared toward managing problems that are mostly unique to the ADD/ADHD child.

Emotional problems are often associated with the pattern of ADD/ADHD behavior and contribute to a poor self-concept and low self-esteem. These problems are also addressed in some detail.

Last, there is some focus on the stress that is often associated with the management of ADD/ADHD behavior. Experienced by teachers and parents, such stress reactions may be quite significant and debilitating. Thus this resource offers techniques to deal with that stress and to survive the critical periods of preschool, school-age, adolescent, and adult ADD/ADHD behaviors.

Terrific resource for both parents and teachers!

This has got to be the best book I've read on dealing with ADD/ADHD kids (and I've read many!). This book offers real strategies that any family can incoroporate. It is VERY useful how the explanations are laid out in a step by step manner. For example, it picks one specific behavior and then shows parents and teachers how to modify, model or shape that behavior by incoporating a specific strategy and walking you through it step by step. Medical information (including medications) is also informative, and I like the section explaining many of the other disorders that often go hand-in-hand with ADD. The author is a doctor and a specialist dealing with ADD kids. He even runs his own special ADD clinic and summer camp in Mississippi. Highly recommended!

Superb, practical behavior manual for parents and teachers

This book should be extremely useful to parents and teachers who deal with children and teens with AD/HD. It gives firm but compassionate guidelines on how to help create positive behavioral change.
It gives specific, step-by-step insturctions on how to facilitate behavioral change. Although the book contains a number of useful checklists and rating scales, the author does not fall into the trap of "checklist rigidity." He uses these checklists flexibly within the context of a rich understanding of the child and his environment.
I enjoyed his sections on how to phrase commands in an assertive, not aggressive manner. The parent or teacher is invited to rewrite some of his or her commands in a different style. The author enlisted the help of child psychiatrists in writing the section on medications. Thus, the medication chapter is more accurate and comprehensive one finds in many books.
He gives lists of age-appropriate, non-food(thank goodness!)reinforcers to help reward elementary, milld and high school-aged students. The Appendix on neuropsychological reports gives an overview that would help a parent understand how testing is done and how the results might look.

Finally....answers to my questions!!

If you have an ADD child, order this book NOW!! How do you teach a child that cannot sit still to save her life? How do you teach a child to concentrate? How do you reach a child whose brain is so disorganized she can't remember what you've just said to her? This book actually gives you the answers. Dr. Flick actually tells us HOW TO REACH (and teach!) ADD children. The book contains surveys, checklists, charts, and worksheets to help us help ourselves. This book is the "meat in the sandwich". I highly recommend it!!

I've read all of Daniel Silva's books and feel this is one of his best yet. It is outstanding on many levels: at the end of the book, the reader walks away not only satisfied with the totally unexpected ending, but better educated as well. Silva skillfully weaves in pertinent politics, history, art, and even a touch of humor. But that is not all. As a writer myself, I also look for the literary style of the author and Daniel is someone to envy. He is a writer who understands the potential beauty of the English language and he demonstrates this as he plays with the verbs and nouns creating imagery of such power that one is tempted to reread the sentences and marvel at his craft.
Silva's books are to be read not only for "what happens next" but to admire his incredible talent in maintaining tension in the story with the skill of his imaginative writing. And that is rare. Here are a few examples from English Girl:
"The anonymous lump of wool and fur walking two steps behind him was Eli Lavon...The lump escorted him silently...then floated into the glare of the Moscow morning sun and was gone." And this: "...trapped in the prison of memory." And this:"...time seemed to stumble to a stop." And this: "...The body would turn up. The sea would spit it out..." and this: "...extended his granite hand..." And this: "...moon was ducking in and out of the clouds..."
I could fill several pages with quotes, but suffice it to say that those who have yet to read English Girl, are in for a real treat.

Silva at his brilliant best!

I have been an avid reader of Daniel Silva's novels since stumbling upon "The Unlikely Spy" last century! But the Gabriel Allon series, beginning with "The Kill Artist" has had me as a fervent admirer ever since. I couldn't wait for "The English Girl" to be published, but as a Kindle owner it was several weeks after the hard copy release that the novel appeared on my device. I was cranky that the digital cost exceeded that of the hard copy, and was prepared to lambast the author if the narrative did not live up to the higher price.
Silva has successfully evaded my tongue lashing! "The English Girl" exceeded my expectations! Silva's wonderful economy of words introduces new readers, and reminds old friends, of the history, background and motivation of previous escapades into the dark universe of espionage. The pace, while not breathtaking, is beautifully paced, well constructed and re-introduces characters from the past.
Silva has the talent for bringing the reader into the book. Of being a fly on the wall, as it were, part of the conversation and involved in the action. Episodes are logically and convincingly linked, like a tapestry, each thread has a story, characters are filled out, but not to the extent of hindering the narrative, just enough to engage the reader and question their motives.
No spoilers as I would be doing a disservice to the multitudes of discerning readers who will pick up The English Girl and never let her go until the end.

Who and What Can We Trust?

This novel grew on me. The main person was Gabriel - an artist who was also smart and an ex-super spy, married to a woman who was also smart and talented. The couple lived in London and were good together. Soon after the story began, though, Gabriel became re-involved as a spy in an underworld almost against his better judgement when he heard that the prime minister's secret mistress, Madeline Hart, was missing. Action heats up quickly in this book.

Gabriel recruited a fellow spy Nicholas who had worked against him in years past. Later the two of them recruited other spies who they knew would be useful to bring down and/or infiltrate the Russians. For their plan, some of them even changed part of their names, although that made it more difficult for me, at least, to follow who was who. The writing was dry at times, yet also showed humor. Here is a piece of dialogue between a spy and someone from the other side during their work: "A Russian henchman met him (Mikhail) at breakfast to take him to the meet and suggested: 'Our office is very close. I hope you don't mind walking.' "Will we survive?' 'The chances are good, but there are no guarantees in Moscow this time of year.' With that, the factotum turned and led Mikhail into Tverskaya Street." (Mikhail was a pseudonym for a man named Nicholas, Gabriel's good friend.)

A minor difficulty I had with this book was that there were too many too many names and descriptions of all the people involved in this story for me to visualize and keep track of. That being said, other readers might not have that difficulty, nor did it detract from the storyline. I got the gist of what was going on and enjoyed this book. I also really liked the fact that action took place in other countries, such as France and Russia, so we readers could imagine being there, hearing the languages.

That screening mammography substantially reduces mortality from breast cancer is a major medical accomplishment of our time and one with potential remaining to be fulfilled. During its development, mammography has taught us much about the biology of breast cancer, the validation and quantification of both the benefit and the potential harm of screening, the relation of technical and interpretive quality to outcomes, the need for scientific assessment of new imaging methods that might supplement or replace mammography, and the uncertainties of mammographic interpretation. In each of these areas, the history of mammography provides invaluable lessons that are applicable to the rest of medicine.

Breast Imaging includes case examples and overviews of all these important issues. Rather than just describe how to perform and interpret mammography, this book also discusses breast disease from a substantially wider viewpoint. It should therefore be of great interest to all physicians who care for women. Contributing to the practical value of this book are its discussions of the aspects of anatomy, histology, physiology, pathology, and biology that relate to the accuracy of screening, diagnosis, and staging. Moreover, the material on breast-cancer initiation, invasion and metastasis, oncogenes, suppressor genes, and tumor angiogenesis provides a broad perspective on the role of screening. The author's knowledge of and insight into areas outside his own specialty are impressive.

In his discussions of screening, and throughout the book, Kopans uses diagrams to make complex subjects understandable and fascinating. For example, cancers are depicted as new balloons rising at a constant rate from the ocean floor and increasing in size as they rise. In this analogy, how deep one dives to recover the balloons represents the threshold of detection. How often one dives represents the frequency of screening. The prevalence screening test is portrayed as the first dive, and incidence screening tests as subsequent dives. The balloon analogy makes the concepts of cancer yield, detection stage, lead time, and sojourn time understandable. In his subsequent discussions of the controversy regarding the screening of women 40 to 49 years of age, the author explains how various experts reached opposite conclusions after reviewing the same data. Kopans presents a convincing case for beginning annual screening at the age of 40 but gives the reader enough unbiased data to reach an independent conclusion.

Half of this book is devoted to topics found in traditional mammography textbooks, but Kopans presents this material so well that physicians other than radiologists will gain insight into the intriguing process of how screening and diagnostic mammography work. The process begins with the challenge of finding the subtlest deviation from "normal," determining whether the deviation is real, locating it in three dimensions from various mammographic views, forming an opinion of what it is by means of additional mammographic views and other imaging tests, and finally advising on a strategy for follow-up or invasive procedures. To gain an appreciation of this chain of events is reason enough to read Kopan's book. An extremely useful feature of the book is that one or two key sentences in each figure legend have been printed in boldface type, enabling readers to virtually skip the text, skim the figures, and absorb the major points efficiently. Yet the more than 800 illustrations and tables are so well selected, sequenced, and reproduced that they invite the reader to explore the text further for more details.

Kopans discusses how, after the completion of breast-imaging studies, the radiologist, using commonly defined terminology, should compose a report that briefly describes the mammographic findings and provides clear recommendations for management. Regardless of how thoroughly the book is read, the reader will reach the inescapable conclusion that the evaluation of mammograms is an inexact science. This conclusion is not surprising, since pathologists working at a much higher level of resolution cannot always easily distinguish between benign growths and malignant disease. Interpreting breast-imaging studies requires making a trade-off between sensitivity and specificity: maximizing early cancer detection while maintaining acceptable rates of repeated testing and biopsy.

The radiologist continues to have a role after the biopsy of a nonpalpable lesion is advised, either by providing preoperative guidance of needle localization for an excisional biopsy or by performing a core biopsy guided by radiography or ultrasonography. The discussion of these techniques considers the reasons core biopsy has been accepted as an alternative to needle-guided excisional biopsy without its having been subjected to adequate scientific scrutiny. Whether or not one agrees with the author, his opinions are always thought-provoking. In this instance and throughout the book, he questions the justification for every diagnostic protocol and never accepts old or new dogma at face value. One of the book's final chapters, on the medicolegal aspects of breast imaging, which in other hands could have been a dry legalistic discourse, is instead filled with perceptive observations that get right to the central problems of our highly flawed medicolegal system. Breast Imaging is an extraordinary book.

Very well written and very good information

I am a physician interested in women's breast health. I found this textbook to be an amazing wealth of information. It is well written and practical, not overly laden with statistics and facts that clutter up pages of information. It is clear, concise and to the point. With all the rhetoric about breast cancer, and treating every case aggressively, it was refreshing to see statements like these reinforced by a medical text book:

"It is fairly clear that not all breast cancers are lethal. Of course, DCIS is rarely lethal (less than 1%) but even invasive breast cancers may be indolent."

"Many breast cancers will not be lethal even if they are not detected early...As our screening tests become more sensitive and begin to find smaller cancers, the number of cancers that have no lethal potential may increase. It will become increasingly important to develop ways to determine which of those cancers may or may not be lethal so that we do not overtreat nonlethal lesions."

"Even the fastest-growing tumors were present and undiscovered for 9 years before reaching 2cm, while the slowest-growing lesions may have been developing in the breast for as long as 29 years."

Truly, the identification of a breast cancer is not a 5-alarm fire. No one is bleeding or choking to death. Women have time to get second opinions, consider the correct course of treatment, consider their options. The rush from the mammogram suite to the surgical suite is extreme and unnecessary.

I have enjoyed this text. Much of it is highlighted, underlined and tabbed with sticky notes. While written by a radiologist, it is not just about "imaging." It is written in language that can be fully understood by all physicians and even lay persons who are investigating/researching all elements of the conventional approach to breast disease.

The reason for the 4-star instead of a 5-star rating is that not one word was written about the value of infrared breast imaging and the important role it should play in women's breast health. The text books, Medical Devices and Systems (The Biomedical Engineering Handbook, Third Edition) and Medical Infrared Imaging have hundreds of studies and mainstream documentation that has been ignored. Breast thermography is a way to identify very early physiological changes that can be addressed, removing inflammation, restoring health to the tissues and lowering the risk for development of mammogram-evident cancer. This text, while called "Breast Imaging" sadly does not include infrared imaging which should become a core part of all screening.

All of us in radiology know Dr. Kopans. His book is great for fellows and can be useful for residents. Make sure you purchase the third edition; the chapter on MRI was rewritten.

"Shy, geeky, amiable" MIT grad Kevin Lewis, was, Mezrich learns at a party, living a double life winning huge sums of cash in Las Vegas casinos. In 1993 when Lewis was 20 years old and feeling aimless, he was invited to join the MIT Blackjack Team, organized by a former math instructor, who said, "Blackjack is beatable." Expanding on the "hi-lo" card-counting techniques popularized by Edward Thorp in his 1962 book, Beat the Dealer, the MIT group's more advanced team strategies were legal, yet frowned upon by casinos. Backed by anonymous investors, team members checked into Vegas hotels under assumed names and, pretending not to know each other, communicated in the casinos with gestures and card-count code words. Taking advantage of the statistical nature of blackjack, the team raked in millions before casinos caught on and pursued them. In his first nonfiction foray, novelist Mezrich (Reaper, etc.), telling the tale primarily from Kevin's point of view, manages to milk that threat for a degree of suspense. But the tension is undercut by the first-draft feel of his pedestrian prose, alternating between irrelevant details and heightened melodrama. In a closing essay, Lewis details the intricacies of card counting.

One can hardly deny that making money runs the world today. There are the specialists in making easy money. These are broadly characterized as speculators and gamblers.

Speculation and gambling have several differences.

Speculation involves increasing one’s chances to profit by various means such as news study, pondering, technical analysis, margin trading, hedging, options, and some have used psychics all with the aim of gaming profit from short or medium term market value fluctuations.

Gambling is wagering by means of an uncertain event with the aim of gaining additional assets. It requires consideration, chance, and a prize. The striking feature is that a small fee or amount is required with a chancy large return within a short time.

Bringing Down the House is the true story of how six MIT students turned gambling into speculation to fleece Las Vegas for millions. The best and brightest students are recruited by an eccentric former teacher with teeth like a picket fence of spades, diamonds, clubs and hearts to practice in a college backroom as the MIT Blackjack Team before invading the strip.

The nice thing about the book is that the secrets of card counting, shuffle study, ace cutting, hi-low counting, group spotters, third base coaches, card count code words, statistic indexes, and other tips the students used and the casinos don’t want you to know are revealed. Of course, one wonders the secret they did not reveal to win.

MIT proved blackjack is beatable and Ben Mezrich tells it with a suitable degree of suspense.

Speculation and gambling are similar in the manner in which they can acquire profit in a short time. Both methods involve risk but a speculator may learn more skills than a gambler’s plain luck to lower his risk. One may invest his hard earned money in intelligence such as Bringing Down the House.

After reading Bringing Down the House, I was excited and fascinated by the luxury life in Las Vegas and the world of card counting. This is a story that's told through the eyes of the author about a group of math geniuses, who used the techniques of card counting. They worked as teams and legally won millions of dollars over just a few years by spending their weekends down in Vegas. The author, Ben Mezrich, wrote the book based a real life story that is almost too incredible to believe. Therefore, even though It's a real story, It’s written like a realistic fiction novel. All the events that happened in the whole story were so intense that I felt like I was thrust into a roller coaster ride. Moreover, Mezrich visualized most of his sentences and sometimes made it melodramatic. He used lots of visual metaphors and descriptions of characters’ inside thoughts. Overall, this is a thrilling book that can be finished in a short amount of time but the scenes in the book might last forever in your head.
From the book, I've learnt a lot about the world of casinos and card counting, the job of the spotters, who cover as many tables as possible and keep running card-counts at their location and help the big player to count cards and the usage of hand signals. For example, a spotter would signal the count of +11 by saying “I wonder if there is a football game today.” (in reference of there are eleven players on a football team). Or he might say “I really suck at bowling” to indicate the count of +10 because in bowling, strike is ten pins. There are also lot’s of other techniques that the team invented. They had their own system. They also learned about the dark side of the casino world, how greedy people are and how the Vegas corporations works. Furthermore, Mezrich always leaves suspense to the readers and stimulate readers’ desire to read more about the story. At the end of all the chapters, you won’t know what’s coming up next. Mezrich is capable of keeping the readers’ eyes glues to the pages. In the book, the MIT team strapped thousands of dollars to their bodies to get the cash onto planes. They used false names, always have limos waiting for them at the airports, always having personal host to escort them everywhere. Reading about their incredibly rich life and their dangerous situation of being caught by the casinos, you will never know what they are going to do next.
Even though the book is a quick read, it interests a wide variety of people, from who wants to feel the thrills and adventure the gambling world to the ones that never gambled before but curious about it. However, the book doesn't related to any big history themes. From the book, it seems like over the course of a few years, gambling is all they do. I couldn't tell how was it like in the 1990s except for the casinos. The author also has too much detail about the card counting techniques and it got repetitive to create the tension between characters and a card counter’s life. It seems like readers can just skim through some parts that is obviously meant to stretch out the book.
Moreover, there are lots of details in the book doesn't seem real. Some of the events doesn't make any sense. For example, why would they hide their cash in all kinds of ways and trying to get through the airport security when they can just use a bank box or a debit card. Moreover, the team always stays at fancy hotels with suites, champagne, limos waiting on arrival, 24-hour open swimming pool just for them. Doesn't it seems too conspicuous to the casinos? Since they wants to keep it low, they shouldn't take risks like that. Also, according to Wikipedia, some of the exciting events didn't not occur. All these over dramatic scenes seems too unrealistic. However, they can really interest the readers. After all, this is one of the cheapest Vegas fantasy people can buy.
Overall, this book contains interesting and exciting stories that keep the readers eyes on the pages. The plot goes quick enough that you won’t find it long or boring. Yet, it’s not the best book to read if you are looking for a historically informative book.

"You Are There" Thriller with a Few Flaws

I have always been fascinated by the "brilliant minds outwit Vegas" stories. After watching 21, I had to read this. I virtually always find that the original truth behind these "adapted" movies is more interesting, and revealing, than the movie itself. This definitely proved to be the case. I really got the "you are there' feeling from reading this - what it was like for those on the team, the fear points, the exhilaration, etc.

The warning I would have for a reader is that the narrative is a bit choppy at times. The writer goes off on tangents, and, to me it was a bit too self-referential. But I am delighted that I read it - and if you are interested in this "genre" I would say this is a "must read."

Robert DiYanni is Adjunct Professor of Humanities at New York University. Dr. DiYanni, who holds a B.A. from Rutgers University and a Ph.D. from the City University of New York, has taught English and Humanitiesat at a variety of institutions including NYU, CUNY, and Harvard. He has written and edited many books for college students of writing, literature, and humanities.

Thank God for Amazon Rental...

Needed this for a class, but actually wound up reading extra on my own. Kind of dated, but there are still some very good essays. A lot of "big names" are actually featured. I particularly liked Stephen King and GK Chesterton. I got this as an Amazon Rental, and am thrilled to pieces that they are offering that for students now. My school charges $50 for a used copy, and I got this for a fraction of the cost. Great deal!!!
