Few are coming to the aid of those beset by these depredations and the evil denizens of the Blacktooth Ridge continue to spill out of the Blacktooth Ridge.

If you play Castles and Crusades this is probably a module you have run or will. If you don't you may want to import it to any D&D like rules set. Basically there is a village that needs help with some local problems that are terrorizing the local peasants. The baron is unable to do much other then collect his taxes. Enter into this the PCs who can be from the village or just wandering through and need some adventure. This module reminds me a lot of B1 Search for the unknown and B2 keep on the Borderlands for D&D Basic from years back. This module is a good intro for players and castle keepers new to the Castles and Crusades system and needing a starting module. The module doesn't drown you with details but gives enough bare bones info for a CK and lots of random monster tables and info on the nearby terrain so a CK can throw in their own encounters and make up some of their own lairs for critters. With the info on the locals and the NPC's' a CK can flesh out all sorts of NPC encounters and interactions or ignore it all and do a "go from the village to the dungeons" sort of thing. Let the players tell you what they want to do and go from there. Anyways if you play Castles and Crusades this module is pretty much a must as its a "classic" and if you play D&D its still a good buy as it converts easy enough as it uses some pretty standard monsters, gives some good maps of a starting village and gives some flavorful NPCs which can be used or ignored as you see fit. One thing is keep in mind that at its price you aren't getting a mountain of material this module is inexpensive and for that you are getting a bare bones treatment of a village, some NPC's, some random encounter tables. maps of terrain nearby with suggestions on what lurks where and a couple short small lair maps with a listing of whats in what lair. All in all I think this module was one of the better RPG purchases I made in awhile. Anyways the module is for lvl 1 to 2 characters to start and a CK/DM has plenty of room to add to it so characters could spend several levels doing stuff in and around the village. There is more danger as you go farther afield so you could add to the stuff in here and stretch it over several gaming sessions fairly easily. This module is well worth the money.

This system allows players to create a truly unique character and offers more flexibility than the typical Fighter/Mage/Thief/Cleric choices common in other fantasy roleplaying games. Combat is deadly and realistic (at least as much as is possible in a fantasy game), which quickly teaches new players to seek less violent solutions to problems. The standard mechanics are simple percentile based which is both a plus and a minus. They greatly speed up play (no reams of tables and modifiers to consult) but have been criticised as being too simple especially as regards to non-combat skills which do not allow characters to improve over time. The magic system is the weakest section in WFRP, being slanted towards the more martial applications - possibly since it was inherited from the Warhammer Fantasy Battle game.
While the mechanics are not without its faults and the magic system could stand a complete rewrite, Warhammer fantasy RolePlay (WFRP) succeeds due to its gothic, dark fantasy background where cultists and conspiracies lurk in every shadow. It also has one of the most intriguing game settings ever published: a renaissance-era 'Germanic' Empire full of roleplaying potential. Combined with what many players feel to be the finest roleplaying campaign series 'The Enemy Within' (published separately), this game is a classic that deserves a place in every rolegamer's collection.

Best Grim Fantasy RPG

Warhammer: Fantasy Role-Play (WFRP) is one of my all time favorite fantasy settings. As a hard-line GURPS freak, I take a lot of flak for that. I can understand why. Most GURPS fanatics hate WFRP character creation. It is rigid with little free choice, and is based on a random roll system, much like d20. I feel that it works for WFRP, and while many (perhaps most) GURPS players end up using GURPS in place of the WFRP system, I would never do that. WFRP works for game balance, it eliminates the rampant munchkinism of d20 and many other systems (including GURPS).
The setting is of course based upon the world of Warhammer Fantasy Battles. It is a grim world. Chaos Beasts will tear out your throat, secret cults infest the cities, Skaven armies hide in plain sight. Magic is rare, and those who use it are often hunted by witch hunters and burned at the steak. There is a definite Lovecraftian influence on the setting (hence I like it).
In WFRP the characters progress through a number of careers. In order to do so, they must earn enough experience points, learn the correct skills and obtain the needed Trappings (equipment). Characters start weak, but can eventually become powerful after taking the advances from two or more Advance Schemes. The only thing you need to think about in preparation for character creation is race: human, dwarf, elf, halfling or gnome. There is very little possible min/maxing. Class (a generalization of several careers) will be chosen based upon how well you roll for characteristics. Your Starting Career is rolled randomly upon the appropriate Class table (Rogue, Warrior, Ranger and Academic).
The rules are based upon percentile skill checks which in turn are based upon the characteristics of the character. That's about all that is needed to be known.
Players often learn a hard lesson about combat. Too often, they jump in all gung-ho from too many years of DnD. There characters end up missing limbs, insane and eventually dead. Combat is VERY nasty in WFRP. The smart player will use combat as a last resort. For those characters that don't die, there are insanity points. Collect too many and you go nuts.
My only gripe with the game is the magic system. Mages will find advancement slow and agonizing. In my humble opinion, that is not all bad, what is bad are the spells are little more than rough cut conversions from the paternal wargame. Realms of Fantazy, does little to fix this. But that is another review.

Organic gardens and oil companies do not play well together

I give it 4.5 stars, better than 4, not quite a 5, but a delightful story with a strong woman determined to make a go of an organic gardening farm after her father, a rancher, dies of cancer. Who doesn't love fresh vegetables, but someone does--two of her workers have been threatened and Molly has no idea why.

When she places an ad for another driver, Adam Hollister, applies. He previously was an oil wildcatter and knows how to take a soil sample to verify whether oil is under the ground on Molly's acreage. While he takes the job to gather such samples, he soon begins to rethink that plan as he watches how Molly works to grow her plants and feed so many families unable to make enough to keep food on the table.

Several crises draw these two highly likable characters together, but when Molly learns who he really he, how can Adam convince her he isn't out to take her land from her? Especially if the state threatens to side with the oil company? Read it and be prepared to cheer.
