" Good grief! I am returning this "book

I could say much more, but will only say two things. First, the author omitted the word Britain from the title. This is a history of British power stations. If you look in the alphabetical index, you will not find the words Zipernowsky, D�ri, Bl�thi, Ganz, Stanley, or Westinghouse. But you will find "Accidents, fatal, to horses, 105." Second, there are no citations. If you want to verify what the author alleges, you are on your own. There is a single sentence in which the author says that he consulted ""Electrical Review, Electrician, Engineer, Garcke's Manual of Electrical Undertakings, and other publications." Good grief! I am returning this "book."

About the Author

Suzanne G. Marshall is an Associate Professor and Area Coordinator of the Fashion Merchandising and Design area of the Family and Consumer Sciences Department at California State University, Long Beach, California. She received the B.S. from the University of Georgia in Clothing and Textiles, the M.S. from Oklahoma State University in Fashion Merchandising, and the M.A. and the Ph.D. from the University of California, Los Angeles, in Higher Education/Organizational Change. She has worked in the fashion industry as a manufacturer's educational representative and in retail management, and has taught at Bauder College and Saddleback College. She is one of the authors of Merchandising Mathematics for Retailing and has also published in the areas of women's leadership, organizational culture, assessment, creative teaching, and retail training. She was selected as a faculty intern for the J.C. Penney Company. Dr. Marshall has done research in various apparel manufacturing companies in the Los Angeles area studying the design and manufacturing process, management, leadership, and product development. She is a member of the international Textiles and Apparel Association, the American Association of Family and Consumer Sciences, the Costume Society of America, Gamma Sigma Delta Honor Society, and Pi Lambda Theta Honor Society.

Hazel O. Jackson received the B.S. degree in Home Economics Education from Tennessee State, the M.A. in Social Psychological Aspects of Textiles and Clothing from Michigan State University, and the Ph.D. in Home Economics from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville. She studied at the University of California, Los Angeles, and has taught at Morris Brown College, Pepperdine University, Tennessee State University, and The Ohio State University. Currently Dr. Jackson is a Full Professor at California State University, Long Beach. She has published in a variety of areas including aging and apparel consumption; textile legislation, care, and recycling; and advertising and store choice. Her current research includes cultural perspectives of dress and assessment of student learning outcomes. She has served on the ASTM Institute for Standards Research on the Development of Body Measurements, as a peer reviewer for the Family Economics Review, and as a peer review panelist for the USDA's Office of Higher Education Programs. She received the Sphinx and Mortar Board Award for excellence in teaching at The Ohio State University. She is a certified Home Economist. She is a member of the American Association of Family and Consumer Sciences; the International Federation of Home Economics; the International Textiles and Apparel Association; and Phi Delta Gamma, Graduate, Kappa Omicron Phi, Omicron Nu, and Alpha Kappa Mu Honor Societies.

M. Sue Stanley has the B.A. in Home Economics from California State University, Chico, the M.S. in Clothing and Management from the University of Arizona, and the Ph.D. in Clothing, Textiles, and Merchandising from Oklahoma State University. She has taught at Pima College, Bakersfield College, and California State University, Long Beach. She currently serves as Chair of the Department of Family and Consumer Sciences at California State University, Long Beach. She has published in the areas of school uniforms, textiles, the role of Home Economists, and children and apparel perception. She has received an Outstanding Service Award at CSULB and the John Skinner Fellowship. She is a member of the American Association of Family and Consumer Sciences; the American Association for Higher Education; the Costume Society of America; the International Textile and Apparel Association; and Phi Omicron Upsilon, Kappa Omicron Nu, Epsilon Epsilon Epsilon, and Phi Beta Kappa Honor Societies.

Mary F. Kefgen is a Professor Emeritus at California State University, Long Beach. She received the B.S. from Iowa State University in Home Economics and the M.A. from New York University in Home Economics. She also studied at Oregon State University, Traphagen School of Fashion, and the Fashion Institute of Technology. She has done textile research in India and Southeast Asia. She was the recipient of a Ford Foundation Grant to participate in the Oklahoma State University project in Bangladesh. She has taught in Germany and France and was selected to teach in Ethiopa with the Agency for International Development Teacher Corps. Ms. Kefgen is a member of the Costume Council of the Los Angeles County Art Museum, the Textile Group of Los Angeles, and Omicron Nu Honor Society.

Phyllis Touchie-Specht received her B.S. in Home Economics from Oregon State University and her M.A. in Home Economics from California State University, Long Beach. She modeled professionally and had a daily fashion/food/talk show for KIEMTV, Eureka California. Retired from the faculty of Mt. San Antonio College, Walnut, California, she has served twice as Academic Senate President and was named Outstanding Faculty Member in 1998. She is Fellow of the International Textiles and Apparel Association and the Costume Society of America. She is a member of Fashion group International, the Costume Council, and the Los Angeles County Museum of Art.

When Individuality was first published, it was one of the premier texts to address clothing choice as not merely a "right" or "wrong" choice but rather a way of producing a desired effect with which the wearer would be comfortable psychologically, physically, and socially. This now-classic text has continued to provide general guidelines for individual and family clothing choices through its five previous editions. It has been a major text for four decades by providing a broad base of knowledge at an introductory level for the general education of students—a task ignored by most clothing texts, which typically have either a more narrow, in-depth focus or target the more advanced student. Individuality is unique in that it meets the needs of the student who is interested in taking a single course in fashion as well as the student who aspires to become a fashion professional.

Focus

In this sixth edition, Individuality continues its tradition of providing a concise overview of fashion as it relates to the individual consumer. The primary aim of the authors is to offer students a basic overview of the various influences on individual thought processes regarding clothing preferences, how clothing is uniquely designed for specific target groups, and how clothing purchase choices are made.

Conceptualization and Update

In order to accomplish the challenge of providing students with the latest information in an organized and compelling format, the authors have divided the text into three sections. The basic organization of the text has remained essentially the same with the exception of Part I, in which the chapters were rearranged to begin with a macro view of consumers. Chapter 1, retitled Target Market Influences, is a discussion of the demographic breakdown of U.S. consumer groups and their responsiveness to fashion. It also discusses the impact of Generation Y (tweens and teens) on the fashion industry. Chapter 2 gives a brief overview of the fashion industry, specifically focusing on basic terminology, past and current influential designers, and theories of fashion movement. Chapter 3 covers the influences of an individual's culture on clothing and shows how diaspora has created an international fashion concept. Chapter 4, the sociopsychological influences on fashion, has few changes. Chapter 5 shows the physical influences of fashion with emphasis on the continuation of two conflicting trends: the idealization of the overly thin body and the dominance of processed foods in the U.S. diet.

Part II examines the design elements and principles as applied to clothing. The reader is given definitions of line, shape, color, and texture and then shown how each is applied to fashion items. This explanation of design elements is followed by a discussion of how these elements are organized by emphasis, rhythm, unity, proportion, and balance by designers who create fabrics and fashion.

Part III focuses on clothing selection issues facing consumers. Chapter 11 discusses the fit requirements of individuals in various age groups. This is followed by a discussion of clothing quality and its impact on price in Chapter 12. Chapter 13 updates previous editions' discussion of consumer clothing care including new methods of dry cleaning and care for new fibers. Chapter 14 specifically relates to wardrobe selection, emphasizing industry trends for careerwear such as the beginning of a movement in some companies back to a more traditional look for business apparel. Chapter 15 ends the book with a discussion of the retail environment of traditional bricks and mortar stores compared to the trend toward e-tailing—bricks & clicks.

In general, the content of each chapter has been updated with new data and photographs. Activities have been updated to reflect fashion in the twenty-first century. An emphasis on fashion and the web has been added with a large number of web addresses provided for student usage.

Dry and repetitive

Although there is a lot of standard NLP info here it is presented in a very dry and repetitive manner. It's also written as though it was a series of notes just appended together. This book could have been much better if there were examples of use or stories of each principal in play. For example, I have many stories of my own life working with clients about using meta programs, metaphor, rep systems. Use some stories to illustrate using each idea. Too dry.

There are other books on this subject much more engaging. That said this book contains a lot of info if you are willing to sift through and know what you are looking for.

Five Stars

I think this book deserves five stars. It is exceptionally well written. It shows the authors love what they are doing. It makes the reader wish for the same passion, expertise and knowledge the authors have got.
The book gives examples of carefully chosen coaching conversations and explains what is happening through these conversations and why. Coaching is defined and explained. The coaching process is shown as something which works both ways, it can transform lives, not only the coachee's, but the
coach's, too.
For me the book was a huge learning curve and provided more than one "aha experience". It won't be collecting dust on the shelf, it is being used.

Mooney, whose well-received memoir, My Racing Heart (HarperCollins, 2002), about the world of thoroughbred horse racing, now examines a more vicious race-women versus women in the workplace-offering a vibrant, studied counterpoint to a touchy subject that's been fodder for many novels of the The Devil Wears Prada persuasion. The prickly dynamics that often develop between women in the workplace-both the subtle stabs-in-the-back and outright executive hair-pulling-are essentially tied up in our society's definition of what it means to be feminine, says Mooney; even though women have "grown more comfortable with ambition, competition, and success," they still place great value on "communication and relationships, on being liked and being nice." There is, unfortunately, a well-documented issue in business called the queen bee syndrome: businesswomen in high-level positions don't reach out to help others climbing the career ladder. Think no further than the behavior of Omarosa, one of the candidates on Trump's The Apprentice series. Mooney, who is not a psychologist by training, takes the time and considerable effort to uncover reasons behind a more general trend--female competition in the workplace. Through a targeted questionnaire, one-on-one interviews, and secondary research, Mooney reveals a variety of corporate conflicts attributable to gender betrayal, such as passive-aggressive moves to undercut colleagues or very different work attitudes. Mooney also discusses the power of the office romance (practiced by some eight million Americans each year). In the end, the recommended solution is heavily dependent on individual change: to acknowledge conflict, behave ethically, help change social policy and media scrutiny, and show respect. Whoever owns the rights to this book is doing themselves a disservice. Mr. Raiport's overview of the Russian Olympic team's psychological training tools is indispensable to athletes and athletics.

This is one of my favorite books! If my house were burning down I'd grab Supertraining and this book. The read is easy and flowing if youre into the subject, I read it all in one night because I could not put it down. NO COMPLAINTS! Solid information

Solid info about the mind game as developed by the Soviets. Lots of good exercises. As usual, it's important to take a fresh look at old concepts, and this book does that. Self development has been around since before the Greek philosophers, but understanding and applying it is made easier by seeing the basic ideas from every angle and using various exercises; this book offers both.

Have you ever fallen asleep over a philosophy book?

You won't doze off while reading this one!

The other reviews have told you what's in this book, so read them. But it's an expensive book -- do you really need to own this book?

Some of you really do. I've reviewed it at some length in the July, 2006 issue of my published review column, Re-Readable Books which you can find at simegen.com in the fall. And that should tell you that it is a re-readable book -- a book you get your money's worth out of because you continuously refer to it.

More than that, after you've worked your way through this book (keeping one hand on your ribs as you laugh yourself blue in the face), you will set it aside. And a few weeks later, you will go madly searching for it because you want to show someone one of the quotes or passages.

And you will get caught up in reading it again -- because the words will have changed before your eyes to a new meaning.

It's that kind of book - a rereadable book.

Is it fiction? Is it non-fiction? Is it fact? Is it philosophical speculation? Wellll -- if you know whether an electron is a wave or a particle, you can answer that question.

Who will benefit from this book?

Like most worthwhile endeavors, you will get out of it what you put into it. The more you know about diverse areas of knowledge and daily practice in our world today, the more relevant this book will be to you personally.

I found that my knowledge of elementary computer programming, my "power user" status with a Windows computer and nodding acquaintance with Linux, my background in Physical Chemistry, my lifelong studies of Kabalah and all kinds of related New Age disciplines, together with my life's work (science fiction and fantasy writing), all came together in this book.

I already had studied most all the concepts displayed in this book -- but I still learned an enormous amount.

As an sf writer, I admired the way Rabbi Freeman took these obtuse and abstract concepts ahd couched them in everyday language, relating them to everyday real experience. His technique is so flawless that I doubt you will even note that he has a technique -- it's as hidden as the mechanism behind the universe.

As a computer end-user, I absolutely understood every analogy.

As a scientist, I understood.

But Rabbi Freeman's magic here is the ability to criss-cross and blend explanatory backgrounds.

As you read this book, if you have any New Age training, any science, any everyday experience with Microsoft(tm)products, you will gain flashes of understanding. But they will fade and you will reread this book to regain that insight.

Gradually, as you think about it day by day, integrate these ideas into your way of looking at the world you will begin to see through the illusion that reality is real, and you will have the vocabulary to discuss it.

Rabbi Freeman solves many mysteries, too. For example, do you know why some Jews still stubbornly pray in Hebrew? Do you know why Jews have a Hebrew Name? Do you think that people die and become angels (or maybe something else?). What is an angel and where do they come from?

There is a Chasidic principle behind the use of humor to begin a learning experience. Delight is, in and of itself, a mystical experience. Not all humor qualifies, but the kind of gentle humor that does qualify opens the soul to possibilities.

It is said of this book that it draws you to think "outside the box" -- the reason it does that is the exacting way humor is used. If you're studying comedy in order to write it, do a contrast/compare study of this book (and other Freeman writings posted on chabad.org)and any sitcom on television today. You can learn a great deal about the Kabalah that way!

Author Reveals Himself

Conversations between G-d and the moon, arguments in the Heavenly Court, supernal beings in therapy, fights between humans and angels... These scenarios are just samples of what the reader discovers in Heaven Exposed, the aptly titled latest offering from Tzvi Freeman. Like his earlier writings, Be Within Stay Above and 365 Meditations, Freeman delivers a unique ability to translate profound concepts based on Chassidic philosophy and Kabbalah and capture them in postmodern language. However, with Heaven Exposed there is an added twist. As Professor David Weitzner writes in his forward to the book, Heaven Exposed is "better described as a work that you encounter than a book that you just read."
Uniquely entertaining for a work with such profound content, the conversational style of Heaven Exposed at times mimics cheesy television soap while at other times takes on the aggressive confrontational mode of Aristotelian dialogue. The content's high curiosity factor coupled with the author's penchant for playing into the hands of controversy draw the reader into the conversations.
Heaven Exposed is both popular Kabbalah and science fiction at their best, presented in a combination that is irresistibly funny and thought provoking. Like the modern phenomenon of adult cartoons, beginning with The Simpsons, the genre-defying style of Heaven Exposed allows Freeman to venture into uncharted territory and challenge conventional thinking. It enables him to move seamlessly between poking fun at the human condition and tackling difficult subjects, such as free choice, suffering and the purpose of life - all with a distinctive, tongue-in-cheek approach that has made Freeman one of the most popular purveyors of the Rebbe's wisdom.
However, as you read the book, you notice that it is not merely defying the traditional boundaries of popular discourse, but creating its own. There is a method to Freeman's madness in which he is carefully crafting his expose - a method that reveals as much about the heavens and the earth as it does about the way the author thinks. On each journey, he takes the dialogues just enough beyond the brink of madness so that the part of your brain not used to thinking outside of the box just about loses it, before pulling on the reins and bringing the subject back down to earth. It is a game Freeman likes to play in his own mind, and Heaven Exposed offers readers a rare opportunity to join him for the trip.
Heaven Exposed is a journey. Because the book is so multi-layered and Freeman's style so eccentric, the nature of the journey and where it leads depend very much on the reader. Heaven Exposed can be read equally as New Age spiritual entertainment, or as a philosophy of life; each reading opens up new portholes and hidden dimensions are discovered upon careful examination. Like any great work of art, you can easily read the book and completely miss half the point, or pay close attention and bring your own thoughts and experiences into it. Either way, the best part about Heaven Exposed is that it reveals not only the hidden secrets of the cosmos and life in general, but, if you let it, it will expose you as well.
