Warnings but no regrets personally

Not terrible but not entirely original:

Be warned that this book essentially copies the examples and a lot of the wording from the docker website. For instance nearly the same content can be gleaned from https://docs.docker.com/userguide/usingdocker/ relative to container link content as well as all other sections. The book has a lot of grammatical and technical mistakes as well.

I give the book 3 stars because it is 'like it' category in the given scale. I appreciate that there is a carry around thing like this. The author does add some content that is more descriptive -or seemingly so to me -than the web user guide. If you are like me and merely want a packaged go-to, regardless of shortcomings already mentioned, this book is just fine. If you are looking for something that is definitive and, frankly, better written, just go read the user guide -it's essentially the same info.

For my purposes, as a quick reference go-to/reminder thing that I will refer to as needed for some projects that I'm on, I do not regret paying for this item. Mileage will absolutely very.

Great (but too short) book :-)

The plot, as suggested by the book title, is about a volcano (although not the one in Italy); About the looming chaos and mayhem that Maia sees (in a precognition) as she sets foot on Mt. Rainier - Seattle's very own "Vesuvius" - while on a school day trip. The plot focuses mainly on Tom and Diana and their [work] trying to piece together and make sense of Maias precognition. Desperately needing to find a way to alter the ominous future predicted by a kid who's never wrong. Finding a solution to the problem turns out to be a challenge, as there are characters with interests of their own...

Charachter-wise there are a number of exciting new 4400 acquaintances, some of which possess more or less incredible superhuman powers. Of course, there are many familiar faces - Shawn and Isabell being one of the more prominent. We get to spend time with the characters and their feelings/thoughts on each other, the future, lost time and what their fates may be. Are they a blessing or a curse?

The writing is pretty straight forward and descriptive (which sometimes spawn pretty long sentences) but nonetheless easily read. I picked up some new words along the way though. The (new) characters are carefully introduced/described and their history evolves in a pleasant matter as you make your way through the book. You're not told too much or too little. Established characters (like Tom, Diana, Marco, Nina, Richard, Shawn, Isabell, etc) are nicely summarized when introduced to the reader.

The book has a good composure to it, you don't get too mixed up in past, present and future. The storytelling is chronological and both pleasant/exciting. The pacing is good. No dull bits. As a viewer of the TV-series I kept reading the dialogue "out loud" (as Tom, Diana, etc) in my head. There aren't much dialogue, but the one that's in the book make sense; as in "that sure sounds like something XXX would say".

If this book would be transformed into the TV-version, it would probably end up as a douple episode (giving us viewers the ever annoying "to be continued..." at the end of pt.1).

Overall I really enjoyed reading this book and if I hadn't been on a trip with my girlfriend (to visit friends who were getting wed) I would probably have finished it a lot quicker than I did.

I want more, like a subscription or something.

the 4400, novel # 1....

since the series has now ended, I'm hoping there will be more novels about the series like this one. This was an enjoyable read, if you're a fan of the series, you should enjoy this.

The story seems to take place between seasons 3 & 4 of the series, as the author makes statements, references, that are meant to review past events that took place in seasons 1 & 2 and assumes the reader already knows about this.

I see amazon now has book # 2 available: "Wet Work".

Familiar But Not Very Exciting

Even though this was written in 2008, it seems to take place perhaps in Season 4 or so of The 4400 television series. It's basically a very formulaic episode in which Maia has a vision of her mom on the top of an erupting Mt. Rainier. It's well-written, but the story itself is only of mediocre interest. I did, however, enjoy revisiting places in Seattle that I've been to like Pike Place Market and the Science Fiction Museum. It's nice to read a book every now and then where you know the faces and voices of the characters and have actually visited the setting.

About the Author

Robin E. Brenner is the Teen Librarian at the Brookline Public Library in Massachusetts. She has created and leads a successful Japanese manga and anime club for teens. She is a member of the ALA/YALSA Great Graphic Novels for Teens Selection List Committee, a list she was chosen to help establish, and she co-authored the RUSA graphic novel reviewing guidelines and the Getting Graphic at Your Library workshop guidelines. In addition, she reviews manga for Booklist, reviews Japanese anime for Video Librarian, and she regularly speaks and conducts workshops on graphic novels, manga, and anime. She also hosts a Web site on graphic novels, www.noflyingnotights.com, and two sister sites (Sidekicks, for children thru age 12 and the Lair, for adults).

Basic book for those who know nothing of anime and manga.

Understanding manga and anime.

This book was a good form of introduction to manga and anime. It gives a decent overview of common themes in the art form. However this does not mean the book was able to go into depth about the more nuanced items in manga and anime. I feel when the book goes into it’s east vs west section of the book it falls a bit short. The author seems to have a fairly rudimentary understanding of the gender roles, gender, sexuality and violence typically found in a number of works in anime and manga.
The book itself is a bit dated and the referenced titles tend to be more mainstream (bleach, one piece and of the AOT or SAO variety).

I do recommend the book if you need a basic of the most basic understanding of anime or manga. However I do recommend you yourself get some exposure to anime and manga. If you are a librarian this book should get you through those commonly found titles and those just getting into consuming.
However even with casual consumption over a long enough period of time The books information will not be helpful to those looking for more “complex” works.

If you are a parent and your child is showing interest in anime and manga. This book will be mostly helpful with big name titles. However when it comes to things you may found “objectionable” or content that may have more nuanced and mature concepts or themes this book will be unhelpful at best.

I feel the reason for quite a bit of my few critiques is due to the author's lack of exposure to varying titles within the genre. Taking even the year the book was written and the massive amount of anime and manga out there I believe the author came in with a limited understanding. As well as their own clear bias.

In short the book can get you through basic terminology, a very basic understanding within the various genres and a basic understanding of the fan cultures. But falls short when it comes to anything beyond that and if you are a parent I would do more research online or talk to those in forums before deciding for your child.

Ohh my Angelo Ti Amo!!! I loved loved this book!! I got to see my baby Drake and visit with Georgia!! But from the opening page Angel took over him and Raquel where fire !! Now we see the reason Angel was trying to hit everything that moved he was trying to burn her out his system but it wasn't working she put her stamp on him and now she was back and he was claiming what was his and boy did he claim it!!!!! From the hot scene in the the hotel when she came face to face to what she awakened to Angelo realizing what he wasn't letting go!! And then My Drake came out to play and it got real plus one more surprise which brings Desired too a stunning conclusion ties are forged battles are lost and won and just when you think you know it gets even R.A.W.er Come meet Angel you won't be disappointed!! Do your Damn thing S.K!!!!!!

I just had to give this review before I went to bed. This book was a great sequel to first book. I have to strongly urge readers to please read Desired the first book first!!!!! Loved Drake and Georgia's story but this book is all Angel and his other half Raquel. A lot of questions were answered especially regarding why the relationship between Angel and his brother Eddie was broken. S.K Lessly did a tremendous job and this book was worth the wait. If you read other books by this author you will truly get a treat as she has included two other favorite characters Max & Mason West from RUINED!!!! How she was able to incorporate them into book was just awesome. Loved it, Loved it, Loved it!!!

Okay so in all of your books that I own I've always maintained that I was #teamJosh however I just finished this book and though I still love my Josh, Angel has taken first place in my heart among SK Lessly alpha males. Wow you did ya thang on this book lady. I absolutely love all of your writing without a doubt but this one has by far has to be my favorite. I love how you incorporated Mason and Max into this story. I'm still smiling at the banter between the guys and how well Max, Georgia and Raquel became friends. This book kept me trying to figure out who was the traitors and who had Angels back I was looking at everyone funny and didn't trust a soul you did a good job of keeping the readers guessing cause I swear I was getting mad at the wrong people. But I loved how the scheme got Drake back to his cousin that was clever lol. As always I am forever a fan and can't wait til the next one drops. It most certainly will be added to my SK collection of purchases.

He co-founded the Flipped Learning Network and FlippedClass.com. He received the Presidential Award for Excellence for Math and Science Teaching in 2002.

Aaron Sams is an educational entrepreneur who co-founded the Flipped Learning Network and FlippedClass.com. He is adjunct professor at Saint Vincent College in Latrobe, Pennsylvania, and was a chemistry teacher in Colorado and California. He was awarded the 2009 Presidential Award for Excellence in Math and Science Teaching.

Gr 5 Up-A fact-filled account of the struggle for women's suffrage. The first three chapters focus on notable activists Lucy Stone, Elizabeth Cady Stanton, and Susan B. Anthony. Hollihan recounts how this battle was inexorably tied to the antislavery movement and the role played by women of color in both movements, including Harriett Tubman, Sojourner Truth, and Ida Wells-Barnett. Women's organizations divided over the 15th amendment that gave African American men the right to vote. The years of the Gilded Age and the early 20th century found new educational opportunities for women and opportunities to write and to speak and spread the message. Carrie Chapman Catt, Alice Paul, and Lucy Burns used new tactics including civil disobedience to draw attention to their cause. Decades of diligent work saw fruition in the passage of the 19th amendment, using the exact words written by Susan B. Anthony in 1878. Hollihan concludes this informative and edifying volume with the statement that "Equal rights for women are not yet the law of the land in the United States." Activities, which make the suffragist years come alive, are educational and fun and related to chapter materials. Included are detailed instructions for making soap and an oil lamp, making and wearing a corset, china painting, and designing suffragist postcards and signs. Captioned black-and-white photographs and reproductions and sidebars enhance each chapter. This introduction to woman suffrage starts off with a great anecdote: the Declaration of Independence needed to be printed in order to be distributed throughout the colonies, but who could do it? Why a woman, of course, even though the Declaration’s “words about liberty and freedom did not include her.” Through an engaging text and well-chosen archival photos, this describes how women in the United States got the vote—a process that was long, difficult, and filled with disappointments. Hollihan takes an in-depth look at several of the women who never wavered from the cause—including Susan B. Anthony, Elizabeth Cady Stanton, and Lucy Stone—as well as a number of events that either held the process back (the Civil War) or moved it forward (western territories giving their women local voting rights). As with other books in the series, this comes with activities, which range from the doable (scrapbooks) to the difficult (an oil lamp that requires adult help) to the tenuous (a cake with “suffrage frosting”). More than the 21 activities, however, it’s the fascinating history that grabs attention. Grades 5-8. --Ilene Cooper

Excellent Resource for Learning about the Suffrage Movement

Rightfully Ours covers the one hundred forty-four years from the signing of the Declaration of Independence to the ratification of the 19th Ammendment, through which women won the right to vote. It chronicles the struggle women had in achieving this right, and gives information about key players, including Susan B. Anthony, Elizabeth Cady Stanton, and Sojourner Truth.

The book begins with a time line which can be used as a handy snapshot of the period. Author, Kerrie Logan Hollihan, does an excellent job of explaining the meaning of terms that may be unfamiliar to young readers (ie: the word, "Suffrage"). It is apparent that a tremendous amount of research went into writing this book. Not only does it include a wealth of information about the women of the time, it also includes information about other social issues such as the struggle to end slavery and achieve rights for blacks, World War 1, and the Equal Rights Ammendment. There are numerous photos from the period which makes it interesting for readers who like looking at pictures. Included in the book are several activities related to the time. Crafty kids might enjoy doing some of them.

Rightfully Ours is an excellent resource for students and teachers who are studying the Suffrage Movement in school. It is also an interesting read for those who want to learn about the period. I highly recommend it.

Kerrie Logan Hollihan brings the women's suffrage movement to life in the informative and inspiring Rightfully Ours - How Women Won the Vote. Throughout the book, Hollihan weaves a clear and fascinating picture of the times, culture, and historical events behind the struggle. Against this context, she tells the stories of the heroic women who fought the battle for equality: Lucy Stone, Elizabeth Cady Stanton, Sojourner Truth, and many others. These surprisingly intimate portraits make the women of the movement real and relevant for today's young readers. A wealth of illustrations and photographs supplement the text. The book also includes a good mix of appealing activities designed to help kids understand the times and relate to the suffragists. Highly recommended!

Enlightening and Educational Read

Young readers will learn about the important struggles women of America faced for rights from the cradle of American history through the early 1920s when they were first allowed to vote. They will be introduced to the term, “suffrage,” the act of voting, and will become familiar with the most important figures in women’s voting history.

What I realized when I began reading this book is that there's a lot I didn’t know about the history of women’s rights in America. Sure, I was aware that women struggled for rights, but the details were always lacking in my education. I’m sure many other Americans can say the same.

This book proved to be so very inspiring for me. Women have been fighting for their rights in America since the very beginning of its history. It took great courage and resilience for them to stand up for what they believed in, in a time where their opinions were not respected. Had it not been for the efforts of: Lucy Stone, the first woman to earn a college degree in the state of Massachusetts; Elizabeth Cady Stanton and Susan B. Anthony, organizers of the first women’s rights convention; Harriet Tubman, an organizer of the Underground Railroad; Harriet Beecher Stowe, who wrote Uncle Tom’s Cabin and many other prominent female figures in the women’s rights movement, we as women would not have the rights we do today. Readers will understand more about the sacrifices our ancestors made that shaped American history and perhaps they will be grateful for their own civil rights.

As with all Chicago Review Press for Kids Series, there are 21 wonderful activities that accompany this book’s theme. Among my favorites are: crafting your own soap, which reminds us of the way women used to make their own from grease; making an oil lamp with a glass jar; staging a reader’s theater for suffrage; finding out how “comfortable” a corset may be; and making a coat hanger banner similar to those that suffragists marched with to promote their cause. In the back of the book are excellent resources for further learning – books, places to visit and websites of interest.

Enjoyable but not well organized

The book is organized as bits and pieces of information and anecdotes sprinkled over the pages..
Sounding to be exhaustive but missing some notable information, including
- XB-70: One of the most beautiful planes, successful and supersonic, now at the Air Museum in Dayton Ohio.
- Civilian passenger planes like the Lockheed Tristar and others
- Hezarfen Ahmet Celebi: The first man said to have flown with wings from atop Galata tower in Istanbul across the Bosphorus.
- Legari Hasan Celebi: Said to have tied up pipes filled with black powder to his body and shot up like a rocket, up to about 30ft and falling into the Marmara Sea,
Both events reportedly took place around 1690 at royal circumcision festivities of the children of the Ottoman Sultan.
On the positive side the book contains a lot of interesting information and informative facts.
It is a useful book, not meant to read straight through like a novel, but consult now and then, or maybe skip pages and read here and there like a magazine.

Good read, but images are too small and details are not very "readable".

I'm an artist and I was looking for an inexpensive book with good reference airplanes pictures. My choice was between this one and DK Smithonian "Aircraft:the definitive visual history". After reading reviews I bought this one. It was mistake! I am absolutely unhappy with quality of images. I mean they don't have enough contrast in them and to small in size (2 inches long)to see details.
Sure, it's a good read, lots of text, paper is good, but images are not so great for what I needed. Also, size of this book is 10"*8.5" is smaller vs DK Smithsonian "Aircraft" 10"*12" (I already bought it and it works perfectly for what I needed)

great for young and old-ish

I bought this for my husband. He wasn't into planes until about 3 months ago, so along with all the documentaries he's been watching, this book fits right in and ties the plane technology together with all he's watched in the past few months. My daughter also is in love with the book. She's 2 and considers it bed time, afternoon, and morning reading- move over Good Night Moon.
The book is comprehensive and makes planes interesting for even the person not interested (me). I am impressed with the documentation, historical accuracy and pictures. I'm also impressed with the ease of reading. This book is meant for anyone who wants to learn about planes, not just the folks who know all the lingo already.
The only thing I was hoping to see more of were pictures of inside the cockpit and all the gadgets, how the cockpit has changed throughout history and what the gadgets do. I have yet to find an all inclusive book that combines this history with a pictorial comparison from the first flight to today of what the pilot and copilot sees from their seat while flying the plane.
Aside from this, I couldn't ask for a more comprehensive compilation of material on flight. Kudos to the publisher and authors for continuing to release updated volumes with more current material.
