Thraxas is a fantastic series. It is a shame that Martin Scott doesn't get more publicity. The characters are fun and well developed, the humor is great, and the mystery/suspense is well done. I have read all 10 books and the characters have become richer, funnier, and more interesting. The author does a great job dropping Easter Eggs that he resolves as time goes on. We should all support Thraxas by buying more books so we can get more of Makri, Thraxas and Lisutarius. There are a lot of interesting plot lines left to be resolved: the fight against Prince Amrag, whether Makri gets to University, and how does Thraxas develop as a leader of men (and women!). Thraxas 10 is a terrific addition to a terrific series.

It fully met all my desires for a Thraxas book, which is to say the story, comedy, and characters were all excellent and I can't get enough. Not much to say beyond that; it's a great book in a great series, and anyone who likes fantasy, particularly comedic fantasy, should read it. And even those who don't like fantasy should give it a try, as it's a great series in general.

Another fun time with Thraxas & Co.

The Thraxas books are always fun. Scott is especially good at fleshing out the characters around the Sorcerous Investigator Thraxas. In this installment, my favorite was the Elf Droo, who keeps Thraxas just liquored-up enough to do his job but can't remain upright herself after a few drinks. These novels are always great light reading for me when I need a break from the real world. May there be many more Thraxas books!

THough I am a HUGE Guido Crepax fan, this particular edition has missing pages! Get the hardcover or other editions, for some reason this one had a few pages omitted for printing costs and the missing pages are some of the best.

Where's the Kindle Version

When I look for a Kindle version of the Magician (both Apprentice and Master), it's no where to be found on Amazon or any other legitimate book site in the US. It has been released in Britain and that does cause one to wonder just what the problem is with releasing it in US? Of course, if Feist and his publishers want to lose money, they can hold out and the pirates will flourish. I'd really rather buy the book and ensure the author gets his royalties. Isn't it about time that Feist insists his US publisher do its job and publish this wonderful book.

Rags to riches - with a magical twist

This is perhaps my favorite fantasy book that I have ever read. This is actually split into two books in most publications (Magician: Apprentice and Magician: Master). They follow the tail of Pug, a wayward lad whose dreams of riding off to war as a soldier are dashed when the only castle master who would take him in as an apprentice was an eccentric magician, Kulgan. His dreams then turn to becoming the world's most powerful magician, while boyhood friend Tomas sets his sights on the path of a warrior...he made it in the soldier's program, after all.

Little do the lads know the events they set in motion. They become unwitting catalysts in a war that engulfs two worlds, and potentially existence as a whole. Magician follows their tale from humble beginnings to a struggle that depends on their untapped potential to resolve.

The story is quite well written and is an enjoyable and engrossing read. While slow at times (particularly at the start), it's still a faster moving story than Tolkien, Robert Jordan, and many other fantasy writers. A smart combination of magic theory, war tactics, and political intrigue give this book many levels on which to enjoy.

Whether you're a longtime fantasy fan (and if you are, you have probably read this book) or a newcomer to the genre, this is a wonderful book to have, and will launch you into a fantastic trilogy of The Riftwar Saga. Enjoy!

Interesting look into the Roman world

I had to buy this book for my Roman Achievement class and I thoroughly enjoyed it- both the book AND the class! Much of what know of the lives of Romans was found by studying the many examples of how they wanted to be remembered- and that is primarily what this book offers. I like that it gives both English and Latin translations of tombstone inscriptions and that it is categorized by different social classes. This gave me a lot of insight into the differences between the lives of the aristocracy versus regular Roman families, slaves, freedman, or persons of the military. If you enjoy learning about the Roman era this book is a must have!

Great intro to Latin epigraphy

This book is good because it not only provides translations of a variety of interesting Latin inscriptions, it also teaches you a lot about the fascinating field of Latin epigraphy. It achieves this not merely by means of some nice introductory essays, but by printing, not simply a translation of each inscription, but also a relatively unedited Latin text followed by a more edited version of the Latin in which all the many abbreviations have been expanded into their full-word equivalents. This enables the reader to compare the translation with the text and learn those ubiquitous Latin abbreviations of which the Romans were so fond.

Stephen L. Herman is a retired electrician and teacher with more than 30 years of experience to his credit. Sloppy on basic theory

This book is required reading for electrical apprentices in Canada. It has lots of practical information and illustrations that are good for the most part. However, I can't let the author off the hook for his incredibly sloppy treatment (poor understanding?) of basic theory. I blame this author for the fact that many electrical instructors are equally foggy on rudimentary theory and sloppy in their use of terminology, and pass their confusion on to generation after generation of students.

A small example: the book states that the joule is the SI equivalent of the watt -- completely, inexcuseably fictional -- and then on the very next page it states a legitimate definition of a joule as being one watt-second. What newbie student needs this? The confusion between energy and power (the rate of energy conversion or work being done) rears its head elsewhere, e.g. in questions like "How many watts of heat are produced when... blah blah blah."

The book's descriptions of atomic structure might've passed muster some decades ago, but they're sorely in need of a refresh.

No appreciation is shown for the proper use of significant figures in calculations. The results of many of the calculations (unless they happen to produce a nice integer result) are stated arbitrarily to three decimal places, e.g. 120*0.0667 = 8.004. This precision isn't justified, and the irony is that a properly-rounded result would actually be more accurate. To compound the problem, solutions frequently involve the calculation of unneeded intermediate results, incurring cumulative errors. Why not fully solve the algebraic expressions for the desired unknowns before plugging in numbers?

I know lots of folks would think me too critical of "details" that aren't really going to affect the careers of the future electricians who are forced to buy this thing. My response is that there is no upside to, or excuse for teaching theory badly. It only causes unnecessary confusion. With respect to my complaint about significant figures, the author misses an opportunity to teach valuable lessons to people who will be making measurements in the field (using instruments with finite accuracy) about being reasonable in the conclusions they draw from those measurements.

The really sad thing is that this could be an excellent text if the author or publisher would let one knowledgeable physics major or electrical engineer go through the book and clean it up. But as long as they have a captive audience, why bother?

About the Author
Sam Carrington lives in Devon with her husband and three children. She worked for the NHS for 15 years, during which time she qualified as a nurse. Following the completion of a Psychology degree she went to work for the prison service as an Offending Behaviour Programme Facilitator. Her experiences within this field inspired her writing. She left the service to spend time with her family and to follow her dream of being a novelist. SAVING SOPHIE is her debut psychological thriller novel.

Wanted to like it...

I was actually really looking forward to reading this book. It sounded like exactly the kind of story I love, a "gripping psychological thriller" (although I do hate it when they put it in the title) but unfortunately in this instance it failed to deliver for me.
So the book blurb intrigued me and the social media buzz about it was considerable, but it wasn't far into the story that the problems become apparent. First, most of the dialogue doesn't ring true, and characters ask themselves dozens upon dozens upon dozens of introspective questions, which was a very odd technique employed by the author and slowed the book down in my opinion.
That being said the premise of this book is a good one. Your daughter is brought home one night by the police and she can’t remember anything that happened the night before past a certain point. The police had found her wandering around an area not usually frequented by her or her friends and mumbling incoherently. One of Sophie’s friends is missing and she isn’t being very helpful to her parents or the police. Does she know what happened? Is she hiding something from her parents?, the police?
This is the story of a mother and daughter who basically make all of the wrong choices right from the beginning of this incident. Sophie’s mother, Karen, is basically home bound after suffering an attack herself some time in the past. She is an emotional wreck and doesn’t know how to deal with her daughter or her husband for that matter. You would think that between the mother, father and daughter one of them would come to the conclusion that calling the police is the right thing to do, but that isn’t the case.
I’m starting to think that maybe I’ve just read way too many really well executed psychological thrillers so it’s rare that I’m truly gripped and horrified. While there were certain aspects of Saving Sophie that I liked, I had just as many overall issues. I will say that I would be interested in seeing what Sam Carrington writes next and that I can definitely see the appeal for some people. For me it's probably a 2.5 stars but I'll give it 3 stars as it's a debut and I love supporting authors.

Middling plot and writing

I've read many a thriller and this one was more disappointing than gripping. The plot did have many a twist and a turn, but it felt contrived rather than artful and truly suspenseful. The characters were one-dimensional, although I did appreciate the creative changes in narrator and point of view to introduce the main twist.

A Gripping Disaster

This convoluted plot is filled with the most dysfunctional characters who, faced with common sense, always choose complete stupidity. The key description for this book is "Depressing". An agoraphobic mother with a daughter whose best friend is murdered tries to "protect" her daughter from a murderer by doing what? Lying to the police? Lying to her husband? Are all English family dynamics this wretched? The unsatisfying ending leaves you with so many questions. The main one being "Did the author lose her pen and just give up on the ending and walk away?" This book is soul-less. Walk away from it.
