How hearing function, and if it's bad then what that might be done
By Gert Bo Thorgersen
One of my reasons for buying this book is my own hearing problems and therefore to learn where the science now are standing concerning repairing the hearing. When I was a small child I by sicknesses lost 15 % of the hearing on one of the ears, and then back in 1974, when I was 27 year old, by an accident, had a fracture of the skull and thereby totally lost the hearing on the other ear.
The book is separated in the chapters: "How we hear", "When hearing loss occurs", "Testing for hearing loss", "Progress in hearing technology", "Surgery for hearing loss", "Coping with hearing loss" and finish with 4 sides having "Prevent hearing loss", "Resources" and "Glossary".
The first chapter, "How we hear", have 3 sides. Here we learn about the sound, which is when measured in hertz and the dB. According to which healthy persons can be hearing from 20 to 20.000 hertz. But what is not mentioned, compared for example to dogs that goes much higher, and that the bats even are going to 100.000 hertz. Therefore we don't always hear on what our dogs are reacting. And then concerning the dB we learn that the sound from a rocket taking of is more than 180 dB. Later in the book we read that it's not well with the constant noise, during the working day, to be higher than 85 dB. And increasing 3 dB means to double the strength. Beside we also in this chapter are getting 2 excellent drawings showing the ear. The first one showing the parts of the ear in the outer, middle and inner ear, and the second showing how we hear, that is how the sound goes into the ear and are transformed into the brain.
In the next chapter, the one entitled "When hearing loss occurs", we learn about the different kinds of hearing losses, and the causes to these losses. And concerning the age-related changes in hearing we get a 3 part drawing which shows respectively the cochlea (the "snail") and how the small hair cells was original existing in it and when some cells has been lost. And on side 7, as an interesting remark, we learn that in USA there in the cars are used bigger air bags than in the rest of the world, and that this results in 170-decibel, when they explode. And that this explosion can result in persons becoming either partially or totally deaf. So it's his advice to keep the car windows closed as this helps a bit against the dB if the air bag explodes. In this chapter, starting on side 6, we gets "Causes of hearing loss", and under this we gets presbycusis (age-related hearing loss), loud noises, ear injuries, infections, otosclerosis (abnormal growth of a bone (the skull)), medications. And under medications there are mentioned many drugs that can affect hearing. For example even aspirin! And in the rest of this chapter we are getting writings concerning earwax, genetics, congenital problems (born with), méniére's disease, tumors, and other causes. And we also have a small drawing and the telling about "Tinnitus: Ringing in the ear".
Then on side 12 starts the chapter entitled "Testing for hearing loss" during which we gets The parts medical exam, Weber test, Rinne test, Audioscope testing, and which kind of educations that the people that are working with this are having. Then follows The audiological evaluation, under which we have Pure-tone testing, Speech reception threshold, Speech discrimination and Other hearing tests. Beside we also have a small diagram showing to which of the hearing loss categories we belong with the actual lowest dB which we recognize. And we also get a two dimension diagram with the dB and Hz in the connection with the text concerning the understanding of the audiogram. Furthermore we have a big Do-it-yourself, five-minute hearing test diagram, which are asking 15 questions, where there to each one can be given the character from 0 to 3. And by adding the points then get an idea about the hearing. For example a score with less than 6 are telling that there are no hearing problems
On side 19 then starts "Progress in hearing technology", in which we among other are reading From trumpet to transistor, The digital revolution, Wireless connectivity, Before you buy, Where to buy?, Finding a reputable dealer. And in the figure 5 we get pictures showing 7 varieties of the hearing aids to chose. And in a following table we gets 6 photos shoving the same hearing aids when they are under use in the ears, and under these pictures we are getting remarks concerning Advantages, Disadvantage, Cost, Who should consider it?, and Wireless capability. And besides in the rest of this chapter there are much writing about each of these hearing aids and which to choose, when buying, signing a contract. But besides, in the chapter, 6 sides with Choosing circuitry, One hearing aid or two? Fitting a hearing aid, and Getting used to it.
Then on side 34 starts 5 sides with the chapter "Surgery for hearing loss". Here we among other are getting Implantable bone-conducting aid, Middle ear implant, Cochlear implant, Auditory brainstem implant, and Other surgeries. And we also get 2 good and detailed drawings. One is showing how a cochlear implant works, that is with the parts both outside and inside the skull. And to this the price of around $40.000 to $50.000. The other drawing, a double drawing, are showing overgrowth inside the ear, in the cranium, and thereby disturbing the hammer, anvil and stirrup, and what that can be done now a days.
The on side 39 we get the one side chapters "Coping with hearing loss". And after this follows 2 sides entitled "Preventing hearing loss", where there is a note entitled Educate teens on how to use audio players safely. Where we read that MP3 players, such as iPods, are capable of reaching 115 dB! And we get a table called How loud is safe? which starts with decibels 20 sound which we get from a watch ticking, and ends by 140 dB for the sound from shotgun blast or explosion.
I like these "A Harvard Medical School Special Health Report" books as among other they with the drawing are good to use if I shall explain something to other persons, and beside they tells us to where the science now have reached.
