Big and Good

I went to a store and looked at all of the new Rand McNally Atlases, along with a few other brands. This one was the best, at least for me. As some have commented, it is really big. The upside is that there is a lot of detail and it is actually not that thick or heavy. The small ones did not have enough detail to make them worthwhile. The spiral ones seem like a good idea, but it is tough to match up different pages and it often seems like there are small gaps in the maps on different pages. With this one it is easier to follow a map from one page to the next. This is big and can be a bit awkward in a car, but it is one of the best atlases out there.

My kids call me an old fuddy-duddy. And they say this atlas proves it. I have one in my car, and another in my kitchen drawer (hey, you never know when you will want to know where something is). I bought this one for my 18 year old son to put in his car, since he will be leaving for college in a month. I'm a firm believer that if you're stuck in a traffic jam on I-80, it's good to have a real map to tell you how to get around it, instead of trying to rely on a GPS (not that helpful) or calling a brother, sister or parent for help. And if you're one of those who think the Zombie Apocalypse might be coming, then you know GPS won't work any more, and you'd better have an atlas to help you find your way down those zombie infested roads. ;-)

Indescribeably Great

I can't explain it, but sometimes nothing else will do but a hardcopy map. I love my MapQuest/Google Maps/etc., but I still rely on my Rand McNally road atlas for planning road trips. Maybe relative distances don't translate as well on a computer screen? Maybe it's more browseable? Maybe because these include scenic routes and give you an idea of the relative populations of the cities you're passing through or near? Maybe the feeling of luddite kinship with past generations of users? Whatever the reason, for the price of 1.5 magazines, this is a great read, and good insurance for when that apocalyptic event renders the computer and gps unavailable!

About the Author
MICHAEL J. ZWECHER is a leading expert on retirement income. He has created guidance, designed products, tools, and portfolio constructions that appeal to the financial advisor community and their clients. Zwecher co-chairs the curriculum committee of the Retirement Income Industry Association. He spent over ten years at Merrill Lynch, holding senior roles in risk management and wealth management, where he ran the Investment Management Strategic Solutions team in the Financial Products Group. Prior to Merrill, he was a consultant with Deloitte, an assistant professor at the Graduate School of Business Administration at Fordham University, and a visiting associate professor at the University of Wisconsin–Madison. Book on RIIA's Essential Readings List

It is worth noting that this workbook and its companion book are on the Essential Readings list for the RMA designation [Retirement Management Analyst(sm)].

Mike Zwecher's books focus on one of three fundamental retirement planning/flooring strategies identified in the RMA curriculum:
- "Investment-based planning/flooring".

The other two fundamental retirement planning/flooring strategies are:
- "goals-based planning/flooring", and
- "product-based planning/flooring".

Because of the non-lobbying "View Across the Silos" perspective of the Retirement Income Industry Association (RIIA), this is a more-objective-than-most measure of relevance and value-added.

The mission of the association includes:

A Poor Choice

It was a major struggle to get through this text. The author's total concept of "flooring" as a way to build retirement portfolio was, in my opinion, contrived. The two paragraph summary sections at the end of each chapter seemed to say everything that needed to be said - it was just better said and better illustrated by other authors on the subject. This book isn't a worthwhile read for the practicing RIA and certainly not useful for the non-professional.

Thankfully a spin off that actually works

The moment I found out Brandon Mull was releasing a follow up to his infamous Fablehaven series I pre-ordered it and when I had the chance to read an advanced copy it was like having Christmas all over again. My kids and I LOVED Fablehaven so I was openly optimistic and very enthused when I discovered his newest book was going to pick up where the previous series ended but focus on Dragons this time.

Brandon Mull did NOT disappoint in this new book.
His book is full of a detailed world any of would love to visit but to see it described through a child’s eyes makes it better. I always find it interesting how he describes the scenery a second time through the eyes of those who don’t know they’re surrounded by magic because it adds this whole other layer to the setting. I felt like I was actually walking around the Dragon Sanctuary. I wish there had been a little more about the Fairy Kingdom when Kendra went in but I cut Mull slack because he did describe it as a world undergoing repair.

His dialogue was perfect. I could feel Kendra’s, and everyone else’s, exasperation with Seth. Newel and Doran always make me laugh so bringing them back was a treat. I like how he really captures so many different types of character personalities to the point you feel like these are all real whether you’re talking about a human or magical being.

I’ve read spin-off series or sequels where it was so bad you felt like a disservice had been done to the original or that it came off like the author wrote it as quickly as possible to capitalize on the money without caring about their fans. This new book was thankfully not tainted by either of those issues. New characters were added to freshen up the story line, a plausible plot line has been created and it seemed like Mull took the time and attention needed to create something that would appeal to his fans who wanted more Fablehaven without sacrificing what made it so great in the first place.

I am hopeful after reading this that the future books will hold onto the same charm and wonder he created in the first series.

It almost made me late for work because I had to finish it!

Dragonwatch is every bit as good as (or even better than) the Fablehaven series; a very satisfying read, and not just for youngsters - I'm over 60! There will be more books in this series, although I'm glad to say - this book stands alone and doesn't end with an annoying cliff hanger; you just know there is more to come.
From an older adult's point of view, I can only think that if Brandon Mull's expertise in creating Seth Halverson comes from his own character, we can all be thankful his own caretakers didn't thump him into a coma before he became old enough to write. Seth is alternately sneaky and charming, unbelievably brave, supremely stupid and incredibly clever. (Just your normal, run of the mill little boy.) Well done!

Sequel series that is just as good as the original!

Finished my brand new book in 5 hours. Only waited 7 years for the sequel series to FableHaven to be released. It was worth the wait! If you like to read I recommend reading this series along with FableHaven!! 2018 is to far away for the sequel!

The History behind the History

There are a number of books about the history of Walt Disney World and it's attractions. You can read these and find when Pirates of the Caribbean first went in , how long the ride is, what was Walt's involvement, how the attraction changed, etc. This nice little book by neophyte author Andrew Kiste covers all that- but more. See Andy (is it OK if I call you that Mr. Kiste?) is a History teacher, so not only do we get the history of the attraction or park, we get the history behind the history. So, for example, when Andy covers The Jungle Cruise we get the usual tidbit that Walt originally wanted it to have live animals (who'd be sleeping during the day), but also a little history of Colonial Africa, a mention of Heart of Darkness, African Queen and The African Lion- all sources for this wonderful attraction.

When A Historical Tour of Walt Disney World: Volume 1 ( and I am really looking forward to Volume 2!) covers Pirates of the Caribbean, is also mentions a few historical inaccuracies of that E Ticket ride. We also get the Crystal Palace, Main Street, the Enchanted Tiki Room, the Carousel of Progress, and Tomorrowland.

And so forth. Again, Bob McLain and his little independent Theme Park Press has brought a new author and a great book for Disney aficionados.

A great read for those sick of the same old recycled

A great read for those sick of the same old recycled, rehashed reviews of Disney World. Rather than being yet one more book detailing the history of the construction of the theme park, this book details the actual history that influenced imagineers as they designed the iconic attractions highlighted in the book (and yes, previous reviewer, it's imagineers). The book not only gave me a new perspective on various attractions but, better yet, it made the history behind them relevant and interesting. The author obviously loves Disney and loves history and combines the two into a fascinating (and very in-depth) study. I highly recommend this book, especially if you're a Disney fanatic hungry for something new.

Imagine a tour given by a history teacher

Instead of the typical 20-something tour guide, speaking from a pre-approved script, imagine a tour given by a history teacher. You learn the history that is included in the ride. You see the background that was included by the imagineers. You find the facts hidden in plain sight. As with some history lectures it can be slow in a few spots. But overall it is a very interesting read.

A good book with a number of period photos. Author could have done better research on ownership history. S/N 3769 is well documented as being owned by Gordon Barrett not Thomas Barrett. Gordon Barrett bought the car in 1971 for 8500 dollars from a dealer in Switzerland. A pervious book on the GTO misquoted the ownership history which leads me to believe the author did his research by reading other books rather than contacting owners.

Truly dazzling book

This book is a must for anyone who is a true fan of the Bayerishe Motoren Werke marque. The photos are unreal. The text with the photos explaining the evolution of the BMW motorcycles is taut, concise and very to the point. These two know their stuff. Our story starts in this book in 1923 and proceeds right up to the 21st century. As the book progresses, chronologically, the author explains the technical advances and why said advances happened to be. The pages are sturdy and slick, which is probably a necessity for this book. The motorcycle fan will undoubtedly drool over the beauty of the restorations of these exquisite vehicles. I learned a whole lot about BMW bikes that I never knew. Owning a Vespa 50cc two stroke I am amazed that anyone would even want to go 170 mph on a motorcycle, which some of the new BMWs do. As a former owner of two UJM, universal Japanese motorcycles, I always dreamed of a Bimmer. This book will undoubtedly rekindle the dreams and desires of anyone who ever lusted for a machine as wonderful as this. I can just imagine all of the searches on craigslist or eBay looking for gently used BMWs after readers enjoy this book. Might be best to hide the checkbook or credit card.

great book but forgot one

Unsure how the R1200c was left out.
Short-lived for sure but a very cool looking cruiser in my opinion. Maybe not well loved but this is called the "art" of bmw, no? Very cool book nonetheless and a must for any beemer owner.

Great vivid photos and a good history of BMW Mottorrad. Great for enthusiasts and others as well.

This was going to be a fathers day present for my dad, who has been an avid BMW enthusiast for the last 30 years. He still loves his 1976 R90/6, his 2001 R1100R, and his 2010 R1200RT. I wanted something that would give him a good visual representation of some of the beautiful art deco bikes BMW came out with, all the way to the modernized mechanical creations of today. I wasn't disappointed.

The book won't cover absolutely every bike or sub group the company has made, but it does a great job of getting a great amount of the most popular and inspired vehicles BMW put two wheels on. It's not overly filled with info on each page, but doesn't lack in that department. It can be appreciated for either the pictures, the information, or both. My dad usually just puts the gifts he gets into "the collection" but this one is always out on a coffee table or the kitchen table. I've even caught my mom, who's more into gardening, browsing the book a little bit recently.

At around $30, this is a great gift idea for someone you know might appreciate it.
