About the Author
William Stallings has made a unique contribution to understanding the broad sweep of technical developments in computer networking and computer architecture. He has authored 18 titles, and counting revised editions, a total of 35 books on various aspects of these subjects. In over 20 years in the field, he has been a technical contributor, technical manager, and an executive with several high-technology firms. Currently he is an independent consultant whose clients have included computer and networking manufacturers and customers, software development firms, and leading-edge government research institutions.
He has six times received the prize for best Computer Science and Engineering textbook of the year from the Textbook and Academic Authors Association.
Bill has designed and implemented both TCP/IP-based and OSI-based protocol suites on a variety of computers and operating systems, ranging from microcomputers to mainframes. As a consultant, he has advised government agencies, computer and software vendors, and major users on the design, selection, and use of networking software and products.

Eighth edition - introduces new content (?) and errors

I'll mirror the less favorable reviews regarding the content in the chapters and the exercises at the end of each. It would be nice to learn enough from the pages in the book to answer them, without having to refer to outside resources that provide much better explanations of the content. If you knew enough to fill in the gaps left in the reading material, for what reason would you still need to buy the book?
What bugs me even more is to find all sorts of errors in the book at this price. Yes, writing a book is hard work, but if the proofreaders can't catch a decimal value in a binary field... The first year/first printing of a new edition should be half-priced.
At least the publisher should host a wiki to allow these errata contributions rather than waiting for the errata sheet to be released. Maybe Amazon could offer user-submitted errata for books it carries?

One of the worst textbooks I've seen

Please. Trust the bad reviews. If you are an instructor, please do not assign this textbook. There is a REASON why practically every student who has reviewed this book has hated it.
There are so many things wrong with this book, I don't know where to start. Did it even have an editor? I'm not just talking about grammar errors. Words and terms will be used...then introduced five chapters later. Simple concepts will be explained in purposefully long and complicated ways (was the author paid per page?). Almost every figure will be placed several pages previous, or after, the places they are referenced, causing a need to flip back and forth constantly. And don't get me started on the "glossary" and "key terms" in the book. A huge number of "key terms" are listed at the end of every chapter, 70% of which are never mentioned in the glossary or appendix, and many of which won't be bolded in the text, or perhaps only mentioned ONCE in the middle of a random paragraph of the chapter, making them next to impossible to find. Which, when combined with the "let's mention concepts we haven't introduced yet!" attitude of the book, makes it pretty much impossible to read through, since you can't even LOOK UP the terms they're throwing at you.
And then there's the book's exercises. There are no sample exercises or worked-out problems in the text, so you can't follow along and ensure you are understanding the material correctly. And the previous reviewers are not kidding when they say the chapter problems given ask for things that have NOT been covered in the text.
And have I mentioned the insanely complex and not-clearly-explained figures? Multiple pages of complex, full-page diagrams and flow charts, which contain short, cryptic figure subtitles and barely any explanation in the text, leaving students more confused than they started with.
I can not, in any way, shape, or form, recommend this book for students to try to learn computer architecture with.

Decent material, absolutely terrible questions.

This is by far the worst textbook I've had yet in college. The material is more of a broad, vague reference that teaches you the basics of the material. This wouldn't be so bad if the questions were the same way. The questions are the most in depth and ridiculous things I've ever seen in a textbook. They require a deep, grad-student level understanding to answer them correctly. If I were you, I would Google "Computer Organization and Architecture 7th edition solution manual" to find a free solution manual. The questions are mostly the same in the 7th edition as they are in the 8th and it helps you to see how useless this book is. Shame on you William Stallings. Don't get this if you don't have to!
