Switch by Chip Heath and Dan Heath| Key Takeaways, Analysis & ReviewSwitch: How to Change Things When Change is Hard(2010) is about how to bring about change in an organization. Its main focus is changing behavior by appealing to the rational and emotional sides of people’s psyches. To generate change, authors Chip and Dan Heath maintain, a leader must connect with both sides, the rational and the emotional. This is because sometimes, one side can work against the other and sabotage successful change. The rational side tends to analyze possibilities for change so much that it becomes unable to act—so change never occurs. The emotional side is ready, or even eager, to act on change, but it can act compulsively and without focus. This means that changes based solely on emotion are likely to fail. To bring about real change, a leader must stimulate the emotional side of a group’s psyche to get the process of change underway, then harness its rational side to give this change a concerted direction…

Read this before you buy
By Charles A. Ray
Change is difficult for some people, and organizations for that matter, to cope with. But, change is inevitable, and we can be ahead of the wave of change, or get drowned by it.
Chip Heath and Dan Heath, brothers who are both professors of management and practitioners, address how to bring change to an organization in their book, Switch: How to Change Things When Change is Hard. They stress that effective change requires leaders to focus on changing behavior by appealing to both the ration and emotional sides of people’s psyches, and by changing the operating environment—even in small ways—to facilitate change.
Eureka Books’ Key Takeaways, Analysis & Review of Switch: How to Change Things When Change is hard by Chip Heath & Dan Heath, succinctly and effectively summarizes the book, outlining the key takeaways, the authors’ credentials, and their style. As usual, the Eureka Books Cliff Note-like summary gives the reader a full appreciation of the reviewed work, making the decision to buy or not an easy one. In fact, the Eureka Books provides some extremely useful information itself. Before you buy, check this out.

Changing gears is important to improvement
By Amazon Customer
Another good review by Eureka. "Switch: How to Change Things When Change is Hard" is a compelling book about instigating change within an organization. This review of "Switch" is perfect for a working professional who (like me) wants to help improve my company, but doesn't want to get lost in the thousands of books in the Business genre.
This review captures the message of "Switch" in 8 key takeaways, and is a quick read for your morning commute, or downtime at work. It was deeper than a LinkedIn article or a blog post, but still had the actionable insights. I especially liked the analysis of why balancing the rational and the emotional sides of your employees is important. By relying too much on rational thinking, people get bogged down with analyzing ways to solve a problem rather than taking action.
A great review, I highly recommend! I was given a copy of this book to review.

~~ Changing an organization ~~
By Richard and Liz
"How to change things when change is hard." Despite what it might sound like, this is NOT about change in your personal life but in an organization.
There are 8 Key Takeways in this Eureka summary (think DETAILED review). Here are a couple to whet your appetite:
>>>#5 - "To influence people's minds - that is, to direct their riders toward a specific change - leaders should focus on what is going right, make proposed changes specific rather than sweeping, and be sure everyone knows the end goal."
>>>#7 - "To put people on the road to change by adjusting their situations - that is, to shape their path - leaders should build habits that facilitate change, make adjustments to the environment that help people gain traction, and make use of change enthusiasts to inspire others."
The original book by brothers, Chip and Dan Heath, is based on their research which included many interviews with change facilitators. "Change involves altering people's behaviors" which means that leaders have to appeal to the mind (rational side) and the heart (emotional side). What does an Aesop fable about a fox and cat have to do with any of this? Find out in Key Takeaway 2.
Several examples are provided to get the point across. Based on case studies is described as not being boring due to the storytelling examples involved. "Upbeat, breezy and conversational."
If you are looking for an overview or refresher this 24 page Eureka summary is perfect otherwise go read the 305 page original. Important to note that my review is based on the quality of this Eureka review and not the original book. Summary provided in exchange for an honest review. Thanks, Liz
