First published in 1950, The Labyrinth of Solitude addresses issues that are both seemingly eternal and resoundingly contemporary: the nature of political power in post-conquest Mexico, the relation of Native Americans to Europeans, the ubiquity of official corruption. Noting these matters earned Paz no small amount of trouble from the Mexican leadership, but it also brought him renown as a social critic. Paz, who went on to win the Nobel Prize for Literature, later voiced his disillusionment with all political systems--as the Mexican proverb has it, "all revolutions degenerate into governments"--but his call for democracy in this book has lately been reverberating throughout Mexico, making it timely once again.

''The faithful are much needed because there is ''much to defend''. . . . But exile, expiation and penitence should proceed from the reconciliation of man with the Universe. Neither the Mexican nor the North American has achieved this reconciliation.'' (26)

Laws need 'faithful defenders'. Chaos does not.

''What is even more serious, I am afraid we have lost our sense of the very meaning of all human activity, which is to assure the operation of an order in which knowledge and innocence, man and nature are in harmony. If the solitude of the Mexican is like a stagnant pool, that of the North American is like a mirror.'' (27)

Paz starts with a psychological/philosophical explanation of the Mexican mind. For example . . .

''Past epochs never vanish completely, and blood drips from all their wounds, even the most ancient. Sometimes the most remote or hostile beliefs and feelings are found together in one city or one soul, or are superimposed like those pre-Cortesian pyramids that always conceal others.'' (12)

Paz then adds a fascinating footnote . . .

''In our history there are many examples of this superimposition: the neofeudalism of the Porfirio Díaz regime, using positivism to justify itself historicaly; Antonio Caso and José Vasconcelos, the intellectual initiators of the revolution, using the ideas of Boutroux and Bergson to combat positivism; socialist education in a country at least incipiently capitalist. These apparent contradictions all demand a new examination of our history and also our culture.'' (12)

Collosal book on history, social, and international relations of Mexico

This book is priceless. It is about Mexican history in the context of American Continents and the world. It is a book of analysis of how Mexico emerged as the country it is today (or 1970 as that was the time the book was completed, by adding new chapters to previous ones written even before that) and its place in the world and its relationship with US. It is not a book for the masses, but once started it flows. I found it easy to read because Octavio Paz presents ideas in a very clear manner.
Like Alexander Solzhenitzin, Octavio Paz writes books for the ages, explaining history and social issues in a very direct, open, critical way. I am not Mexican. This book is a must read by anybody who wants to understand the "whys" of our times.

Transformative and enjoyable

An interesting read, if a bit reductive and over-negative about the Mexican identity. A professor of mine criticized some Mexican schools' decision to have high school students read it--he thinks they are too young and will internalize negativity and become desolate of their heritage/history. Even still, I found this book extremely transformative and enjoyable. I bought a copy in the original Spanish for my father.

apropos to current "drought" in California

"Age dating of tree stumps that are now submerged in lakes and rivers has identified two epic droughts periods in California during the Middle Ages. Stumps at Mono Lake, Lake Tenaya and Walker River show two medieval droughts, one lasting 140 years and the other at least 100 years. The twentieth century was not 'normal' when compared to this longer record; it was, in fact, California's third- or fourth-wettest century of the past 4,000 years. Scott Stine, in his report on this research, noted, 'Since statehood, Californians have been living the the best of climatic times. And we've taken advantage of these best of times by building the most colossal urban and agricultural infrastructure in the entire world, all dependent on huge amounts of water, and all based on the assumption that runoff from the Sierra Nevada will continue as it has during the past 150 years.' "

Water is such an important resouce in California- great review of this

What better time than in a deep drought to read this book. This book thoroughly documents the cycles of water, as it is experienced throughout California. It also documents how this water was and is captured and distributed. Also presented are the projections of population growth, agricultural expectations, and how these demands can potentially be met. It is an excellent overview of this very precious resource that we often take for granted.

This book is a concise, factual, and unbiased description of California's water supply system as it is today. Rather, how it was when the book was published (2009). Particularly helpful are the maps and photos, which help the reader picture what the system components look like and where they are located. There is more to the story of water in California and there are a number of books covering that topic.

About the Author

I laughed, I cried, I breathed hard, and I sighed. It was my first Nancy Herkness, but not my last!!!!

A CEO, a writer, and a star quarterback walked into a bar. Sounds like the opening line to a really good joke, and you keep waiting for the other shoe to drop. But this isn’t a joke, this is one well-written hot and bothered novel. I love a good romance. I really love a well-written romance novel with a strong female protagonist who doesn’t let the leading man run over her. I hate lily-livered, simpering leading ladies, who sniff into their hankies and develop cases of the vapors (if only writers knew what vapors really were, LOL).
Nancy Herkness delivered a complex storyline that kept my attention and entertained my mind as well as my libido on more than one occasion. Her main characters were well developed with a lot of depth and complexity to their personalities that gave them believability and life that lifted them off the pages of the book. The brooding, but extremely intelligent hero is always a favorite in my book. I enjoyed watching this hero and the heroine matching wits as they sparred their way through the pages and sheets of the story. The surrounding characters were colorful and added to the story. The storyline itself was simple and straight forward, with a couple of small sub-plots that filled out the novel and gave some backstory to the characters.
It has been a long time since I have sat down and read a simple, straight forward story, where girl and boy meet. Boy has no desire to fall in love. Girl has no time for boy in her life. But life throws them together and BAM!!!! Life happens, sparks fly. One problem, the boy is the “king of the castle”. The girl hates “kings” and all things “rich and corporate”. Oh, he is not without his own foibles. Even though he is CEO and successful in his own right, he feels that he is a failure in his family’s eyes. Then the tables turn and she must come to his rescue and save him from himself.
I laughed, I cried, I sweated, I loved reading this, my first Nancy Herkness book. It won’t be my last.
A definite FIVE STAR rating.

Classy book cover but story could have been better...

As much as I want to like every NetGalley ARC e-book I am issued, it is not always possible. Unfortunately, The CEO Buys In is one of those cases. The cover and book synopsis were both well done. Thank you, Ms. Herkness, for providing a very classy cover with our handsome hero actually wearing a shirt. This reviewer prefers class over skin on her romantic reads. Unfortunately, in this instance, it was the writing style that missed the mark. Starting off very subtle, the first red flag was when Nathan Trainor, the CEO, came down with a high fever shortly after meeting the heroine, Chloe Russell, and in his delirium kept asking her to “make it better.” Basically, ignoring his associates/friends/acquaintances in the same room, but calling out for her. Though some might view it as romantic, it seemed juvenile to me. Since he barely knew her name, it also seemed unrealistic. I also did not know what he meant by referring to her as “his ringer.” Much later, I did figure it out but again pretty premature to think he would think of her in that fashion so quickly.

As a very forgiving reviewer, I easily shrugged that off until 57% into the book the unlikely, non-character fitting, too numerous, not particularly well-written, steamy situations began to highjack the story. In fact, I started to notice the same phrases being repeated with each encounter. It is never a good sign when you feel awkward and embarrassed for the main couple and fast-forward to try to find the storyline again. Even the writing itself started not to flow as well.

The next in the series will undoubtedly be about the other two billionaires, Archer (pro football player) and Gavin Miller (famous author). Hopefully they will have more of an emotional, romantic connection between the leading couple, therefore, more engaging storyline.

they are from different worlds - how can it work?

Nathan’s wealth is so substantial that he is permitted membership in a club so exclusive, few people on the planet are eligible. But there is a down-side to all that wealth – the women he meets are only after what he can give to them, or do for them, and that includes Teresa … the one woman that Nathan thought was different. Now he’s not so sure he’ll ever be able to find a woman to love him for who he is. Drowning his sorrows at the club, two other men, each sitting alone appearing to be doing the same, strike up a conversation with Nathan. Perhaps it is too much liquor, or the testosterone-fueled desire to win, but all three agree to a bet – that within a year, they will find that one right woman and put a ring on her finger, or forfeit for charity an irreplaceable treasure of their choosing, along with a significant wad of cash to boot.

Chloe, a very capable woman with an elderly grandma to care for and a skewed view on large corporations due to her father’s unfortunate life experiences, is working temporary jobs while saving her money up for the day that her grandma will need companion assistance when Chloe is working. Chloe adores her grandma and would do anything for her, but grandma remains stubbornly independent. The day Nathan comes down with a terrible case of the flu that has him delusional is the day that Chloe is temping as his administrative assistant.

Nathan’s personal physician convinces Chloe that she is needed by Nathan’s side to keep him calm, even though being by his side now means sleeping on a cot next to Nathan’s bed, in his home. As Nathan recovers and regains lucidity, he is none too pleased to see Chloe in his bedroom. A battle of wills between Nathan and his physician ensues, which ends with Chloe staying. Nathan figures they may as well get some real work done while she’s there. He somewhat grudgingly comes to like her and respects her skills. He also finds her beautiful, engaging, and insightful. She also is different from the other women he’s known – rather than being attracted to the wealth and power he clearly has, she is almost put off by it, and this intrigues him.

Against her better judgement, she finds herself attracted to him, and doesn’t work too hard at holding back when he begins to pursue her physically. She knows she should not have a relationship with her boss, not just because he’s her boss, but also because he is way out of her league in every way. And while Nathan initially has no illusion about her being anything other than a “for now” woman, he can’t help but pursue her.

Many things happen between the pages of Nathan getting the flu and the end of the book that take the reader on a ride from happiness to sadness, hope to hopelessness, and the inevitable drama that comes with difficult choices and heartbreaking decisions. In the end, this was a very satisfying read, and I wouldn’t have wanted to miss it. I look forward to reading book 2 when it comes out!

Very useful in daily practice

I am a Primary Care Physician with a special interest in Dermatology. I got this book during a medical conference (Pri-Med in Boston).
In reviewing this book, I found it is really helful in my practice because every procedure is very well explained. For example, it has tables for recommended doses of steroid injections, as well as guidence in the type of equipment needed for every procedure. The pictures are excellent. The book has a DVD if you need more details about a particular topic and it has a link to access online. The authors give advice for coding and billing, which keep non-profit organizations in business. I love this book. I use it every day in my practice and recommend it to any practicioner wanting to improve their skills in dealing with dermatological procedures.

All you need to perform a full range of Dermatologic Procedures in the Office

I have been planning to greatly increase the breath of office dermatologic procedures I can offer to my patients for some time, and this book has been critical to the success of this effort. Everything I needed for setting up my office for performing a great variety of skin procedures are fully covered in this book.

Most importantly, this book is detailed and practical.

It begins by reviewing the basic equipment and supplies needed to set up the procedure room.
Next, the text reviews the various anesthesia procedures used for the various skin surgeries. Again, the description and the photos are detailed enough for me to be able to perform these procedures in the office.

There is much practical detail on areas that are usually not addressed well in primary care procedure books: hemostasis, suturing technique and suture selection.

After introducing the equipment and techniques needed for the procedures, the book then covers all of the procedures done in a primary care office: laceration repair, skin biopsies, electrosurgery, cryosurgery, and removal of common lesions (such as lipomas and epidermal inclusion cysts).

In addition to the more basic techniques, there is detailed description, diagrams and photos of more complex techniques. There is sufficient detail presented to address some lesions requiring a more complex repair.

Also, there is extensive coverage of treatment of benign "cosmetic" lesions, such as skin tags and dermatofibromas. For those who want to introduce cosmetically enhancing dermatology procedures, there is ample detail on performing chemical peels, using dermal fillers and Botox and the use of lasers for cosmetic procedures.

The book alone is the very best on this subject for the practicing physician, nurse practitioner or physician assistant. However, there is also a phenomenal DVD that accompanies the book.

DVD alone is incredible -- like having a great workshop review whenever you want.

Great for showing anesthesia methods for common office skin procedures.

In addition, it reviews all the common office biopsy and excision procedures in practical detail.
It also has some very informative demonstrations for some common office procedures, such as cryosurgery with methods presented that will improve outcome and minimize patient discomfort.

For those that are interested, there are great video clips demonstrating the cosmetic procedures, such as Botox and dermal filler treatments.

In addition:
The whole text and all the videos can also be purchased for your iPhone and iPad by going to iTunes.
This makes the whole package completely portable and easy to use in the office

Initial 'version' of this book - "Skin Surgery, A Practical Guide" was invaluable to me in developing insight into primary care skin procedures. Now the new evolution- "Dermatologic and Cosmetic Procedure in Office Practice" is my favorite reference and field guide in the procedure room.
Tables on characteristics of sutures and steroid strengths, and figures of skin tension lines and at-risk anatomic areas are few of many useful tables and figures I frequently use as snap shot references. With the Ipad application of the same book, I enjoy watching the video clips on the go- an excellent audio-visual experience that helped refine my surgical skills and advance my practice to a whole new level.
From 'Getting Started' to 'Putting it All Together', this book/ mobile application has all the crucial information needed to start, thrive and excel in providing much needed office-based procedural care services. With excellent quality pictures and videos, it is a complete self-learning tool and invaluable resource for every learner, educator and practitioner of primary or specialty care.

Waste of money

If you are going Vegan for your pregnancy, then this book will work for you.
However, if you are already vegan, then this book is obvious and redundant of everything you already know and practice daily.
Most of the book is about being vegan and what you should eat, pregnant or not. Then there are less than 80 pages on actually being pregnant, but not necessarily vegan and pregnant. The only reason I would recommend this book, would be for anyone who is vegan and pregnant, but getting judged by family and friends who don't understand that you and your baby could possibly be safe in your pregnancy. This book is for them to show them that being vegan is perfectly safe for everyone

Good for those who have no prior knowledge

This book is great for beginners, but not that great for a vegan who already has basic knowledge about diet, nutrition and pregnancy. If you buy this book, I would recommend reading it before other pregnancy books. It is a great introduction to the whole experience and has a nice, gentle tone. I appreciate how forgiving the author is, and how she advocates health without sacrificing your sanity. The tidbits on nutrition were helpful, however my favorite part of the book was the advice on how to deal with people around me questioning by diet choices. Other reviewers noted the recipes-I have yet to try them because my kitchen is already full of vegan cookbooks. I was really just looking for vegan information specific to pregnancy and I must say that it is limited. Most of the book focuses on pregnancy in general and covers all the basics like what not to consume, pregnancy symptoms, labor and delivery, breastfeeding and many other things I've already learned from other books, my doctor or the internet.

Pros: great for vegan beginners or those new to pregnancy, gentle and supportive tone, simple and easy to remember nutrition information, great advice for dealing with those who question the vegan diet, great introductory tool to pregnancy, labor and delivery and the breastfeeding process, lots of recipes, appendix with other sources of information

Cons: Little benefit to seasoned vegans with a general nutrition background, no real in-depth information and very brief, covers many of the basics noted in every other pregnancy resource, doesn't really cover "everything vegan" as promised

Great book but I felt it was written more for someone who wasn't already vegan. I was looking for more information but as a vegan of many years it didn't include anything I didn't know already, and I wasn't looking for recipes.

Worst Book I Have Ever Paid For

Summary:

I bought this book with the hope it will provide insights into the complex and ever evolving ad networks for android. My second hope was it might be a good reference for information on ad networks. Unfortunately, this book fails on both sides. It does not provide a single useful piece of information you wouldn't find widely and publicly available. Not only that, but it is not even a comprehensive reference missing more popular and successful ad networks than what it contains.

Details:
1- Book breakdown:
This book consists of 4 sections and 3 appendices. The first section is a long introduction which anyone ever developed for android already knows. The second section is a ridiculous step-by-step tutorial to signup and setup AdMob, InMobi, MobFox, and LeadBlot. Thankfully, no paper was wasted for this section as I read the Kindle edition. In section three the author just rambles around wasting more of your time. In section four, after writing a 173 words conclusion, the author shamelessly dedicates it to advertise for his other books and website/blog.

The 3 appendices, on the other hand, are surprisingly more useful than the book sections. Appendix one is data the author collected on ad networks. However, most data fields are missing, and as I mentioned before, more popular ad networks are missing than what's included. Appendix two is a collection of links mentioned in the book. Appendix three is a glossary of 15 terms (this should be your indicator of how rich the book is).

2- Missing information:
Common phrases you'd read:
"I haven't had a chance to verify their ad solution yet"
"I can't say for sure"
"I did not investigate further"
"I didn't have time to"
"I haven't been able to verify this"
This should give you an idea that the author have not fully done his homework in gathering the information for you. In addition, in appendix one where the author is supposed to provide data on ad networks, most fields are labeled either as NA or unknown. Again, more information is missing than included.

3- Conflicts :
The author says "Push ads are another ad format that I do not want to be involved in at this time" at the end of appendix one. However, he includes moolahmedia in reviewed ad networks, which is mainly a push notification ad network. If the author criteria was not to include ad networks that only have push notification, then he should have included every ad network since none of them only have push notification alone.

I'd say the author is either bias or not well organize and a bit lazy!

4- Typos and mistakes:
I advise the author to use spell check for his next book. Typos such as "isin't" should not appear in any book. Furthermore, when you say APK instead of JAR you pretty much screw up the entire instruction list. The author did this mistake at least twice.

Conclusion:

The content of this book is more suitable to be summarize in a nice and freely available blog post. I stress on summarized because the content is over stretched to look richer.

This is not a book, it's payed advertisement. Stolen money.

Before buying this book I read the review of Ammar Mardawi:
"One star review, very bad... but only one person wrote that, other 3 reviews rated fro 4 to 5 stars.
Maybe Ammar Mardawi has given a too bad review..."

NO. IT'S ALL TRUE!

- It's very short. I read it all in one hour and half.
- It gives no information (it tells me how to register to sites???)
- It refers to many things that could be interesting (things for which I've bough the book), but they are treated in another book!

Just what the doctor ordered!!! This book is very well written and contains valuable information for the android developer who has struggled to turn a profit. I picked up this book and was very impressed with the value of the content. It is worth 100x the price!
