About the Author
Walter Alvarez a professor of geology at the University of California, Berkeley, is one of the founding members of the International Big History Association. He was awarded the 2002 Penrose Medal, the top honor in geology, and is the author of The Mountains of St. Francis and the best-selling T. rex and the Crater of Doom.

Great introduction to geology, via the Apennines and Italy

This is a wonderful introduction to geology, told using the format of the discovery of Italy's geology (especially around Rome and the Apennine mountains). It is especially valuable since there doesn't seem to be much available to the general reader in English about Italy's geology. So it is highly recommended.
There is also a positive review in the July 31, 2008 issue of 'Nature' magazine, although that reviewer points out that Alvarez' certainty in this book about the Chicxulub crater causing the extinction of the dinosaurs is now met with skepticism. The book is also printed on poor paper, so the photographic reproduction is poor. Possibly because it is a scientific work still in progress, the close of the book (explaining the geographic layout of Italy and the compression then extension development of the Apennines) is not very well developed (or illustrated).
If you are interested in geology, or in Italy's landscape, buy the book!

Geology lite for people who are interested in the personal recollections of one of the best known geologists in the U.S., Walter Alvarez and his father, Luiswho developed the theory that the wave of extinctions on earth at the end of the Cretaceous period resulted from an asteroid impact. Alvarez does not say much about this in his book, but he does refer to the boundary layer that provided the clue on which the theory was based. The bulk of the book describes the geological history behind the creation of the Apenine Mountains of Italy.

Lacks diagrams, but still excellent.

I enjoy the relaxed and logical way this book explains the geology of Italy. It illuminates a number of geological principles along the way, and builds on ideas presented in Alvarez's previous book, T-Rex and the Crater of Doom. However, this Kindle edition lacks the drawings that helped make the paper edition easy to follow. It is still worth having.
