Don't forget volume 2!

I agree with the review of TK below, but as for the ending leaving the reader "hanging", I know exactly what has happened. If one buys the Fredonia edition of the book, it comes in two volumes. For whatever reason, when searching the Amazon site and calling up the book, only volume one appears. It is possible to find volume two by typing in the ISBN number: 1589631714. After reading volume two, all those loose ends are tied up quite nicely and it makes it a very rewarding reading experience. The whole series of books in Dumas's Valois series: Queen Margot (Margaret de Valois), Chicot the Jester, and the two volumes of The Forty-Five Guardsmen are a wonderful story and deserve more attention.

Calling all history fans

Yes, I am absolutely crazy about 16th century French history. And Dumas has a whole series for this era. Though "La Dame de Montsoreau" is my favorite of the series, the Forty-Five does not lack young, handsome and rich gentlemen and beautiful and graceful ladies, not to mention the private lifestyle (humorous I found) of the King Henri III and his brother the duc d'Alen�on. It was overall just captivating, I felt like I was reliving this time period. Again, I suggest you read the whole series, especially since this is the last book in the series. But I prefer this 'Valois' series to the 'D'Artagnan' or 'Marie-Antoinette' etc. series... It's more fascinating for me. The only thing is, that the end leaves a little something to be desired. I don't know if Dumas meant to write a fourth book in the series, cuz he seems to leave a few things hanging. But if you can ignore that, the rest of the plot is great!

It was really thrilling to read the story of the beginning of the King's musketeers. Excellent translation, wonderful action and characters, Dumas did it again. highly recommended.

Good resource to have available.

Some of the information is a little dated, some of the procedures just aren't really done anymore unless you're super old school. Some of the torque specs are different depending on your application and hardware used. But, it is a great reference tool when assembling a SBC for clearances, assembly procedure, etc. I studied it especially when installing my crankshaft. Between this book and google, there isn't anything you can't figure out. I would highly suggest it be in your garage on the shelf.

Great for older motors - not updated for 1986 and newer.

Was torn between 3 and 4 stars. I have used an earlier version of this book to rebuild a few small block chevy's - it's the ultimate rebuild book for the older motors. The problem is it hasn't been updated for the one-piece rear seal or roller cam & lifter installation. However, there isn't much available that is any better. So I settled on 4 stars.

Old, not fully up to date, but still a cornerstone of this activity. I learned TONS from this book. I am now well prepared to build up a 350 for my Jeep Wrangler. What the book did not cover can be found in supplemental materials. Highly recommended if you want to learn how to do this.

Walter Alvarez a professor of geology at the University of California, Berkeley, is one of the founding members of the International Big History Association. He was awarded the 2002 Penrose Medal, the top honor in geology, and is the author of The Mountains of St. Francis and the best-selling T. rex and the Crater of Doom.

Great introduction to geology, via the Apennines and Italy

This is a wonderful introduction to geology, told using the format of the discovery of Italy's geology (especially around Rome and the Apennine mountains). It is especially valuable since there doesn't seem to be much available to the general reader in English about Italy's geology. So it is highly recommended.
There is also a positive review in the July 31, 2008 issue of 'Nature' magazine, although that reviewer points out that Alvarez' certainty in this book about the Chicxulub crater causing the extinction of the dinosaurs is now met with skepticism. The book is also printed on poor paper, so the photographic reproduction is poor. Possibly because it is a scientific work still in progress, the close of the book (explaining the geographic layout of Italy and the compression then extension development of the Apennines) is not very well developed (or illustrated).
If you are interested in geology, or in Italy's landscape, buy the book!

Geology lite for people who are interested in the personal recollections of one of the best known geologists in the U.S., Walter Alvarez and his father, Luiswho developed the theory that the wave of extinctions on earth at the end of the Cretaceous period resulted from an asteroid impact. Alvarez does not say much about this in his book, but he does refer to the boundary layer that provided the clue on which the theory was based. The bulk of the book describes the geological history behind the creation of the Apenine Mountains of Italy.

Lacks diagrams, but still excellent.

I enjoy the relaxed and logical way this book explains the geology of Italy. It illuminates a number of geological principles along the way, and builds on ideas presented in Alvarez's previous book, T-Rex and the Crater of Doom. However, this Kindle edition lacks the drawings that helped make the paper edition easy to follow. It is still worth having.

Excited about Reading!!

I would characterize this book, and others in the series, as great choices for reluctant readers (esp. boys as the market sometimes seems to inundate us with books that are geared more towards girls), because it presents like a combination chapter book-magazine-comic; and the facts/trivia and historical notes included are terrific, too! I would further note that it is great not just for reluctant readers, but for book-lovers as well: My 6-year-old son loves to read anything, including chapter books, short stories, comics, magazines.... His favorites are usually funny stories like this book! Having listened to parts of another Geronimo Stilton book, read aloud by his sister a year or two ago, I could tell he'd like them when he got to the point of reading on his own. I was right!! He laughed out loud throughout this book, and wanted to keep reading it outside of his regular 'reading time!' I cannot wait to get him more of the titles in this great series!

"i, geronimo stilton, am not a big fan of spooky things. but when stilton cheese began disappearing during my trip to england, i had to do something that cheese and i shared the saME NAME, AFTER ALL. COULD I FIND THE MYSTERIOUS CHEESE THIEF, OF WAS I IN FOR A BIG SCARE PUTRID CHEESE PUFFS, WHAT AN ADVENTURE..... a great adventure and mystery. i liked it alot."

Parental comment: Book after book in this 'Stilton' series has proven to be quite enjoyable for our dauther. Her reading skills are accelerating because of these adventurous books.

I liked this story because it was funny and cool. Geronimos got in fights with his cousin. The funny part was when they hit him in the head with a
hammer.He gets trapped in a mousetrap. He follows the shadow and he leaves
cheese in case he gets lost so he coud follow the cheese tracks.I think
everyone would like this book because its funny and cool!
